Once upon a time, there were boys. They made up fifty percent of the Earth’s population, and everywhere you looked, they would appear. Boys roamed the planet with girls, and if there were women around, the amount of men nearby could, and almost always would, triple.
But, this tale isn’t about girls; it’s about the boys in their lives. This is the untold story of how girls truly feel about boyfriends, relationships with guys in general, and the qualities that separate the men from the boys. Follow as we take a trip through the confusing forests of relationships, and just through that other end is the castle, where your Prince Charming or Princess awaits.
When it comes to determining the knights in shining armor among the stable hands, one thing sets them apart – personal hygiene. Women would like boys in general to be clean. After all, cleanliness is next to godliness. Please shower on a regular basis - thanks, we’d really appreciate it. And when it comes to wardrobe, girls don’t expect your clothes to be expensive and fancy, because they aren’t shallow. But, we would appreciate it if your armor actually fit you, instead of hanging halfway off of your rear end.It’s nice to see a man who can take care of himself. Of course, we love you for what’s on the inside, but we also love it when you take some extra effort to look your best for us.
We as princesses would also request that you take care of your bodies in the physical sense. Being healthy is important, and if you show us you care about your bodies, it means that you have your priorities straight – not caring about yourself shows you don’t care about anything else, either. You don’t have to be the next barbarian, but it impresses us when you implement exercise into your life. And what impresses us even more? Include us in your workouts! Staying healthy together is a good way to bond and strengthen (no pun intended) our relationship.
When it comes to physical appearance, ladies as a generalization prefer a prince who is clean-shaven. There are times when it’s appropriate (if you’re trying to start a career as a mountain man or you just returned from a weekend hunt) but for the most part women don’t like cuddling with a porcupine. Unless you’re Brad Pitt, you probably can’t pull it off anyways. We as future queens know that it’s a pride thing – you grow your beard to show dominance and to prove that you are manly enough to have facial hair to begin with. But we also like you to be presentable in society, and dating Sir Scruffy is not ideal.
Along with physical appearance, women have this general rule:when it comes to your behavior, please PLEASE don’t share with us what you had to eat for lunch by belching repeatedly. Once or twice is excusable, but fifty times is toxic. Your bodily functions are less and less amusing the more we have to endure them. The same goes for farting, but less. The less princesses know about that, the better.They are just not interested. These sorts of things are appropriate when you’re just hanging with the other knights, but we are your female counterparts and we would just like to imagine that your life is gas-free.
Your hobbies and interests are things that we are interested in, however. We might not be die-hard jousting fans, but we don’t mind watching with you once in a while without complaining. You shouldn’t expect your significant other to start liking everything that you do, though, because it will NOT happen.And we feel the same way - we have our interests, and you have yours. It’s okay to be different and have different tastes, just as long as there are some similarities in there too. After all, opposites attract!
Quality time together allows knights and ladies-in-waiting to develop their hobbies together, and to see what sorts of things they have in common with each other. So, let’s spend some time together. Please? We love being with you. If we didn’t we wouldn’t be dating you. Courting is like hanging out with your best friend but with more romance involved. So take us out to do something, because we like to get out and try new things. We might be deathly afraid of that giant spider in the corner, but we definitely have a sense of adventure.
Don’t worry about impressing us, because we’re already with you. Going on dates doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, and we don’t expect you to whip out your scepter or bag of gold coins every time we want to do something. As long as we’re together us ladies don’t care what we’re doing. Stargazing, picnics, taking a walk, and just relaxing with friends…it’s the simple things that matter.
We like being with you all the time, but we need time for our ladies maid’s, and you need to be with the Knights of the Round Table, too. Hanging out with your guy friends is encouraged, and as long as you let us know ahead of time that you have plans with the guys, we don’t care. Women love seeing their boyfriend with their family and friends, because it means that they have their priorities straight. Friends are important - don’t forget about them! They’ve been there for everything, from that time you got food poisoning on the trip to Camelot, or when your pet snake ‘slithered off’ while you were away at jousting camp. Try to balance the time you spend with them and us, otherwise you’ll have some unhappy best buddies.
Including us in your plans with the other knights will win you big-time brownie points. Women want to know how you interact in your friend circles while in a relationship. Approval from both ends is very important. It’s crucial to us to have our girlfriends like you, so you should be on your best behavior because the approval of them can heavily influence our decision on whether to behead you around or not. The same goes with your friends. We want your buddies to like us, so we can stick around.
Meeting your friends is nothing in comparison to meeting the King and Queen for the first time. This is the part that makes all girls nervous. It’s like meeting the friends, only ten times worse because it’s really the family’s opinion that can make your relationship sink or swim. If the family hates the princess, then your relationship is almost always in deep trouble. So, be supportive and sympathetic. Help us to relax by telling us stories about your family, and giving us hints on how to fit in. If Duke Jerry likes pineapples, let us know so we can get him one as a gift. If Lady Susie had a bad experience with the color red, warn us so we don’t wear it.By helping us to know the ins and outs of your family, we’ll feel much more at ease when the time comes to meet them.
We’ll do the same for you, as well, because we want our relationship to work. If you’re meeting each other’s families, it’s kind of a big deal. Princesses love their family, they love watching you with your family, and they would do anything to fit in with them. Meeting the family is similar to a job interview, except it lasts for hours with people you potentially could be related to for the rest of your life.
After you made it through all the twists and turns of the forest of relationships, you’ve finally arrived at the castle where the beautiful princess or handsome prince awaits. With these helpful ideas and informative facts about how women felt, the knights were able to leave their tool days behind to form healthy relationships without hurting their chances with the ladies in the future, and the princesses were capable of giving them that chance. And they all lived happily ever after.

Love at First Sight?
Right before I really started getting to know Tim, I was one of those tragic “Love isn’t for me- my last boyfriend broke me for good” types of girl.I wasn’t interested in love at all, in fact, I would categorize myself as being pessimistic towards it.The fist day I met Tim in Math 108, I purposefully put my backpack in the seat next to me so that no one would sit by me.When the teacher sent around the assigned seating chart to fill out, I practically rejoiced for being the lucky girl with the extra space around her.Then Tim came rushing in, and of course spotted and made his way towards the one chair I was praying he would miss.He had no idea, but he already had hit strike one.Strike two was when he started talking to the teacher like they were best friends (I had no idea at the time they worked together developing an online class).And strike three was that he had an English accent.I knew the girls must just go crazy for that, which would mean he HAD to let it get to his head, and if there was one thing I didn’t like- it was boys who thought too much of themselves (the prideful do always think it’s everyone else besides them).I could already tell this was going to be a long first block class.
I was taking 23 credits and working the 4 am campus janitorial job at the time.So it shouldn’t be a surprise when I say—there were a few Math classes I just could NOT wake up for.After I missed two in a row (of a first block class) I knew I needed help catching up.So, I knew I would have to talk to the boy beside me in class.Luckily, he was nice about helping out, so I invited him over for food (I’m Southern- that’s what I do!)
Love at First Sight?
Yep, this is BYU Idaho; strange things happen here.It was my first day of school for over 4 years and my first day of school in the USA.My sister had registered my classes and enrolled me in the Math 108 block class… ughh!!!! I’d been home from my mission for a year and girls were just not on the agenda; I was in a new country, a new school and a totally new environment. We all sat down in random seats and Bro. Goodwin made a seating chart – we were locked in our places for the next 7 weeks! So, yes you’ve guessed it, Rebecca and I were sat next to each other… and it was not love at first sight… it probably tilted the other way in fact!We didn’t speak much the first few weeks but towards the end of the block we’d reached a more jovial conversation.We were both busy and even dating was not on our minds, but She did invite me and another classmate to hers one day for some food and to help her with some work she’d missed out on.I was quietly impressed with her Southern hospitality and cooking skills!
Destiny: not in chance but in choice
After the block ended, I think Tim started stalking me—looking for free handouts for more food no doubt.After “randomly bumping” into each other and going to President Eyring’s Devotional together, I think we both realized we had a lot more in common than taking Math 108 in the same block.Then, the e-mails started.He was exactly what a girl who was too scared to get involved again needed.He e-mailed me in the mornings, telling me to have a good day and to ask what I was going to do.After I would tell him my plans, he would e-mail asking me what I had done so far and if he could come over after he went to work that evening (but always adding in he didn’t want to bother me and I should say no if I wanted).Then he would stop by for a couple hours and we would just talk for a couple hours.He was everything I said I was looking for.He never forgot to open a door, he got to know me before he even tried to hold my hand, he brought my roommates presents (ones from the heart, not just ones he bought), he played board games and sports with me instead of just sitting on the couch.And most of all- he always wasstanding up for what he thought was right and knew more about the gospel better than any other 22 year old I had ever met.
My roommate and I had a hard time believing that Tim was genuine.From past experience, no one was this great.After our first official date, I thought it was for sure over.We hadn’t really talked much like we did when we were at my apartment- that had to be a sign we would only work as friends.Oh well- I knew that love wasn’t for me anyways.
Destiny: not in chance but in choice
After the block class was over we started bumping into each other frequently in random places; at the Romney, Porter Park, in the halls and on the way to see Elder Eyring at Devotional.We had no one else to go with so sat next to each other for an hour before devotional started.From my perspective we had a great conversation and I started to take a heightened interest in this Tennessean cowgirl.By this time we’d started a casual e-mail correspondence and started playing walleyball together a couple times a week. If nothing else, I was happy to have a fun friend to spend a couple hours with instead of just doing study and work.
The Courting Journey
A couple of days later, Tim told me how much he truly liked me.Since I didn’t really want to like him- I had a hard time admitting out loud that I liked him too.So while I was trying to get comfortable with liking him, he thought I was rejecting him.For the next week we stayed in contact, but a whole lot less.It was the day he came over and asked my roommate for a bike ride I was about to call him out on being a player.And so that night I wrote him an e-mail asking for an explanation.He wrote back apologizing for hurting my feelings and came over that day.After talking it through, I realized there had just been difficulty in both of us expressing our feelings out loud.We started dating.
For a girl who thought love isn’t a fairytale, Timothy sure swept me off my feet.Every girl wants a man like mine- even if she doesn’t know it.I didn’t know men like Tim were still around to be honest.He picked me a flower everyday when he walked over to my apartment.He said prayers with me at night.He cut out stories from the Church News and found small quotes everywhere and would tape them to my door so I could always find them and smile.He felt the same way on the important subjects of life as I did, and when we didn’t agree we always talked about it and found a way to see eye to eye.He always built everyone up around him and really didn’t think he ever did enough for me- yet every night he left I was awestruck he saw something in me he liked.I still am today.I’ve come to the realization that yes, he’s far from perfect—but he sure is perfect for me.
The Courting Journey
Not surprisingly we felt comfortable together and every so often something we said would strike in the other’s mind. I hadn’t taken a girl out on a date since before my mission but finally had the desire to formally plan and ask Rebecca out on a double date… she said yes of course and the next Friday we enjoyed an “Amazing Race” scavenger hunt with one of my work colleagues and his date. We had a great time but I was still not interested in any relationship; I was just enjoying Becca’s jovial company, and continued with our weekly walleyball sessions.
Eventually one Thursday evening I was sent an email telling me I needed to decide the direction of the relationship – the next day we had a “DTR” and we started our journey together; this was my first “girlfriend” so it was fun to start something new and be shown the ropes of how to be a good boyfriend.We were both working in Rexburg for the Summer and enjoyed spending time with friends and each other.I think most guys take a cautious position when dating… questions of commitment; preparation and ability to provide are strong factors in the strength of continuity in a relationship headed towards marriage.I had my nerves and doubts and Becca made me choose whether to continue or back out forever – I think girls nearly always know quicker than us guys what the score is!She knew what she wanted and talked to me pretty straight… I didn’t want to make a decision but realized that if I was to continue I would have to choose to be in love.And that’s what I chose.
Engagement
The engagement story was amazing.But the engagement process—not so much.After the difficulties of finding a place to live, getting a car, completing your schoolwork, going to your job, fitting in the extra activities we had dedicated ourselves to prior to the engagement for school, and doing all the necessary checklist item---- we started to realize we couldn’t do it all.We both found ourselves emotionally drained before we could even say hello at nights.So, we did what we had to do in order to stay sane.We eloped (as much as you can with a temple wedding anyways).We decided we would just get married in 3 weeks and whoever could make it was welcome to come—we’d be there and that’s all that matters.
Engagement
The new semester started and I settled in more to the mindset of marriage.We both knew we would get married but didn’t know when or how. It was hard finding time to be together to make arrangements and things; finding a ring wasn’t too hard but thinking how to propose was quite the ordeal.I’ve always believed proposals should be well thought out and special… after all, it only happens once! A few ideas failed to blossom but I eventually found opportunity at the weekend of General Conference.We’d never been before and so we went down with my family for the weekend. On the Saturday evening I took Rebecca out to the Melting Pot fondue restaurant; on previous trips to SLC she’d always said she’d love to eat there… after the meal I arranged to have a horse and carriage pick us up and take us around the city before we ended up in County Creek Park where we’d taken a walk a few months earlier.I’m pretty sure by now she knew what was going on.I produced a scrapbook Id made of our courtship so far and did the manly thing, got down on one knee with a diamond ring and asked her to marry me.I’d say it went rather well!
Eternal Love
The wedding day I was completely fine- until I got to the Bountiful temple and couldn’t find Tim.I went to the underground parking while he went to the parking in front.When I found myself in alone in the lobby with all these other brides beside me with their groom, I practically started hyperventilating.The nervousness every other bride feels on the day finally hit.I almost started bawling right there at the welcome desk.Eventually, Tim & I found each other.And after about a half hour, I was completely at peace again.I had found my eternal love.
Eternal Love
We originally planned to get married in our off-track in January but due to complications and stress in planning we brought the date forward and planned a simple wedding in three weeks.We always wanted to ensure we concentrated on the marriage and not the wedding, and were sealed for time and all eternity on 21st November, 2009 in the Bountiful Utah Temple.After the sealing we exchanged rings and engraved on the inside of mine were the beautiful words “Eternal Love.”
It was quite the journey to get there but I’m elated to be able to start a new one now with the one I truly love.Now every day is a whole new love story in itself.

Complaint about the plasma center. I feel many in the community would like to know that this took place.
On June 11 2009, around 10:30 am. I was treated to the horrific spectacle while at the plasma center. It was the first few minutes of the movie “The Kingdom”. When the movie started, it warned the audience before it got to far into the film that it was indeed rated R. Then the “fun” starts. A group of men begin gunning down innocent men, women, and children in graphic detail. Quickly followed by a suicide bombing where more people get torn to pieces by shrapnel from the blast. I approached the counter and confront them about the rating of the film, and publicly showing it in an mainly LDS community. The girl at the counter assures me that it’s the “Clean Flicks” version, and that its safe to show. Assuming that I was being told the truth, I allowed them to plug me into the machine, at that point I would be forced to stay for the duration of the procedure.
Clean flicks boasts “No Graphic Violence, No Graphic Sexuality, and No Harsh Profanity” (taken from the clean flicks website). After being plugged in, the movie hit a slow point, and I began to relax. About 20 minutes later, the action picks up, and it becomes very obvious that this is not the Clean flicks version ( I later went online and discovered, that there never was a clean flicks version of the movie made). With more blood, violence, and cussing then I ever saw or heard in my two years as an EMT.
So here I am, plugged into a machine that’s attached to my circulatory system, so I cant just get up and leave. With a rated R movie on display on close to a dozen TV‘s. I would think that in a mainly LDS community, a company would have enough respect for the company’s patrons and the community to refrain from such behavior. It is also my understanding that the majority of those employed there are also LDS. Why was this movie being shown? Was it just to sate an employs sick idea of entertainment? So there I was, getting paid to watch a rated R movie. If a friend offered my $50 to watch a similar movie, I would out right refuse. Wouldn’t most of us refuse as well? Why was no one saying anything? When the machine had finished. I demanded to see the movies case, to determine its version and rating. Even if it was the clean flicks version (which to my knowledge and the clean flicks web site, there is none) that kind of movie should not have been shown publicly in this community. With little money in hand and my peace of mind in the trash. I left feeling insulted and betrayed. Its not worth my morals and virtues for $50 a week, or any monetary value for that matter. I will never support a company that treats me and others in such a manner where we have to sell our moral values.
The Crossroads is not just another dining center. It is a place where students can eat, study and socialize, according to university officials.
“It is in the middle of campus, the crossroads of campus,” said Greg Carson, food services manager.
Meant to be the campus premier dining facility, The Crossroads, is located on the second floor of the Hyrum Manwaring Center and is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It has 1,250 seats. The Crossroads opened on Monday, Sept. 7, for the first time.
“Our design process for The Crossroads started 4.5 years ago,” said Rulon Nielson, Director of Facility Planning & Construction.
Bryce Kendrick, a freshman studying health, said he likes The Crossroads better than the dining area at his previous college, Utah State University.
“It’s a lot bigger and easier to pick food because it’s not all in one line,” Kendrick said.
There are seven different food lines to choose from. The variety of food ranges from Mexican cuisine to brick oven pizza.
“The way it was designed was to bring cooking out of the kitchen and in front of the students. This way, it is not only traditional dining, but educational as well,” Carson said.
The food is not the only reason why many students might want to check out The Crossroads. With a bowling alley underneath a large dining area and a stage on the north side, some believe it’s a great place to hang out.
“I love the change… I think it’d be a great date place,” said Gayle Dye, a junior studying elementary education.
The determination to reconstruct the campus came from President Clark and other General Church Leaders. This facility was designed specifically for students’ needs, Nielson said.
City streets that have been free parking now require a small red and white permit that hangs from the rear-view mirror of a vehicle. The university permits, issued by the City of Rexburg, cost $15 per semester or $35 per year.
Reactions to these changes have varied. Some students are suspicious.
“I just want to know why they are doing this, because it seems like they are doing it just to make a quick buck,” said Cody Pettersen, a sophomore studying business management.
The Rexburg City Council, which oversaw the planning and implementing of the new law, hopes that the regulations will be beneficial for everyone.
City Council President Christopher Mann said that the city had several reasons for making the changes. Working closely with university officials, the City Council researched other college-towns’ parking regulations such as Provo, Utah; Laramie, Wyoming; and Logan, Utah.
“This is not a unique solution, as it has been tried in other communities with similar sized schools with an effective outcome,” said city clerk Blair D. Kay.
President Mann also responded to criticism by some that the city had ulterior motives for the new parking regulations.
“Something had to be done,” Mann said. “We were fearing for the safety of the students. Our goal is not to make money.”
The funds collected from the sale of permits go to the city’s general fund.
“It’s less than a drop in a bucket,” Mann said. “Our police budget is over 2.2 million.”
As of Thursday, Sept. 11, all residential and university permits were sold out.
Included in the new regulations are rules on how vehicles should be parked. Along many streets, drivers are now required to back in the diagonal space.
My wife has threatened to call social services on me if I ever decide to implement some of my theories on parenting. I said to her that I was flattered and was certain social services could learn a lot from me.
For example, I have this idea that parenting is a lot like the free market. When businesses compete for your money, you get the best service available at the best price possible.
Likewise, children should compete for their parent’s love. If you’re a parent like me, you know that there’s a limit on how much you can love. And, because there’s a high demand from children for the love of their parents, you can bet that they will be willing to compete for it.
On FHE days, instead of having a board that lists who’s going to pray, share the scripture and provide refreshments, I’m going to have a ranking board that lists my favorite child to my least favorite. It’s kind of like a Dow Jones Industrial average for love.
In this way, my children will always know where they stand with me. The top child will, of course, have more privileges than the other children. And, the bottom child will have more punishments. You know, the normal punishments: smaller food portions, more chores, constant looks of disapproval and disappointment, and of course the obligatory, “Why couldn’t you be more like your brother/sister” statements.
If the free market is good enough for America, the land I love, why couldn’t it work for families? Not to mention, when you give children privileges they didn’t earn, they begin to feel a sense of entitlement. They lose perspective on what it means to really work for something. And, they lose the pride that comes with achievement. They just come to expect everything for free.
I don’t know any parent who loves their children freely.
Medical care is a perfect example. With the rising costs of healthcare these days, what better incentive is there for children than to compete for it? Say you have three kids; the best thing to do is to purchase health plans for the top two children. Basically what you’re doing here is using the time proven economic principle of scarcity. By making an essential resource limited, you can bet your children are going to do everything within their power to make certain they can get that vaccine for polio.
Some of you are probably saying, “C’mon, as a parent, if your child gets sick you’re going to do everything within your power to make sure they get better.”
This is true. But what you also need to do is constantly remind your child that even when they didn’t deserve to be taken to the emergency room, you took them anyway. This is how they will learn how much you really love them.
Another idea I had for loving and effective parenting is to keep your children in constant fear of the boogieman. Growing up, my mother would threaten me and tell me that if I didn’t eat my rice, the boogieman would come to get me. This was effective at first, but over time, when the boogieman wouldn’t show up, the threat lost its inherent power. But, imagine if she had just taken it a step further.
Imagine this, you tell your child that if they don’t eat their rice the boogieman will get them when they sleep. That night, after they’re fast asleep, you go to your closet, you put on the gorilla suit you bought at the D.I. for $10.95, and you march yourself into your child’s room and you scare them. You scare them until they wet their pants.
That will teach them to eat their rice. Either that, or they’ll have an irrational fear of suburban gorillas. Either way, they will think twice before doubting you.
On Monday afternoon a Mechanical failure on a roller coaster at the amusement park "Great America" located in Santa Clara, California, left 24 people standed for hours on the ride, some as high as 80 feet off the ground. According to Augie Wiedemann, deputy fire chief of the city, the ride was ascending to the highest point of the ride, actually where it begins, and then it just stopped. Affortunatly no injuries were reported, the Invertigo ride stopped about 12:15 pm. (3:15 pm. ET) and passangers were stuck for at least three hours.
Firefighters were removing passangers from the ride's restraint system and lowering them into a basket at the top of a fire truck, the last passangers got off the ride by 5:45 pm. However, this was not the only incident happening during this month. On June 10th in Hot Springs, Ark.-A power outage left a dozen riders on an amusement park rolecoaster suspended upside down while firefighters and workers scramble to recue them. A fuse blew out at Magic Springs & Crystal Falls bringing several rides to a halt Saturday evening.
On the X-Coaster, 12 riders waited upside down at the highest point, 150 feet in the air, before they were returned safely to the ground. The X-Coaster's two cars were at the peak of a giant loop.The Hot Springs fire department used a ladder truck to rescue the riders, and spectators cheered when riders reached the ground. Authorities said that the rescue took about 30 minutes and emergency medical personnel examined all the roller-coaster riders after they came down.
Dan Aylward, Magic Springs president and general manager, said the theme park has experienced outages in the past, but usually they last only seconds. Entery Corp is investigating the cause of the outage near the park. Crews could find no faulty wiring. Now you know, there might be a slight chance that the adrenaline in roller coaster rides can last longer than couple seconds.
Opening in mid-December, the new frozen yogurt venue in Rexburg has had a surprising turnout of customers. Despite the cold weather Twizl Berry has an environment that seems to accommodate those of all ages. Whether people need a nice treat or a break from their daily lives, Twizl Berry seems to do both for you. To diversify from the rest of the economy Twizl Berry tends to show diversity in the choices you can make there. Even though budgets are tight for everyone, Twizl Berry still seems to rake in the customers to its business.This establishment has over 40 toppings and a diverse variety of flavors to choose from.As we can see, Twizl Berry seems to add a friendly environment to the community to help boost the suffering economy. With all the changes in parking regulations that have taken place on and around campus at the start of a new semester, some might feel like a driver’s ed student trying to learn to parallel park.
Students and faculty at Brigham Young University – Idaho are returning to three different sets of changes for parking on and around campus.
1.Extending parking areas requiring an “A” or “B” permit to some streets surrounding campus.
2.“University” permits sold by the City of Rexburg are now required for parking on many city streets around campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
3.“Residential” permits sold by the City of Rexburg are required for parking on many city streets that are in residential areas close to campus.
Streets like West 450 S. and S. Center Street that run in front of the Taylor Chapel now require a “B” parking permit. This permit, $10 from the University Parking Office, is the same that most students buy to park in university parking lots on campus.
Further out from the center of campus, city streets that have been used for parking on for free now require a small red and white permit that hangs from the rear-view mirror of a vehicle. The university permits, issued by the City of Rexburg, cost $15 per semester or $35 per year.

Some thought that a different solution could be more effective.
“Why not just put in meters?” said Adam Blaylock a junior studying political science. “Then you would only pay for it when you need it.”
Others felt that the changes were minor in the larger scheme of things.
“Lots of times people get frustrated, but for the price of the parking permits here its definitely worth it, especially compared to U of I,” said Ben Holland, a sophomore studying sociology and a transfer student from the University of Idaho.
The Rexburg City Council, which oversaw the planning and implementing of the new law, expressed a strong hope that the regulations will be beneficial for everyone.
City Council President Christopher Mann said that the city had several reasons for making the changes. Working closely with university officials, the City Council researched other college-towns’ parking regulations such as Provo, Utah, Laramie, Wyoming, Logan, Utah and more.
“This is not a unique solution, as it has been tried in other communities with similar sized schools with an effective outcome,” said city clerk Blair D. Kay.
President Mann also responded to criticism by some that the city had ulterior motives for the new regulations.
“Something had to be done,” Mann said. “We were fearing for the safety of the students. Our goal is not to make money.”
The funds collected from the sale of permits go to the city’s general fund.
“It’s less than a drop in a bucket,” Mann said. “Our police budget is over 2.2 million.”
As of Thursday, Sept. 11, all residential and university permits were all sold out.
Included in the new regulations are regulations on how vehicles should be parked. Along many streets, drivers are now required to back in the diagonal space.
However, Scroll observed on Thursday, Sept. 10 that less than 25 percent ofthe 49 vehicles parked between the Snow building and the corner of Second S. and First E. near the Kirkham, were parked correctly.
Captain Lewis of the Rexburg City Police Department said that while police will eventually issue tickets for improperly parking, “We’re trying to give them time to adjust.”
Long time residents of Rexburg have praised the new residential permits (green tags that hang from the rear-view mirror). Bernie Jensen has lived on College Avenue, which runs from in front of the Spori building to Main Street for 41 years.
“I’m all for it,” said Jensen of the new regulation. “Before it’s been a real problem.” He mentioned how difficult it was for family to visit when the street in front of his home had no place for them to park.

As death continues rise in Haiti one BYU Idaho student explains that losing her mother has altered her life dramatically. Lets take a look at how she is coping, and what students around campus are doing to help.
Farah Jn Baptiste with the help of her close friends remains hopeful as she continues school just one week after losing her mother.
“They say that I am strong, and I don’t know maybe I am. But I am just doing things that I don’t even think that I could. Cause I lost my mom anyway. But I know that I still have to go to class,” said Baptiste.
Farah continues to focus on school because it was her mothers wish that she gain an education.
“Sometimes I am kind of scared of myself. It’s just not me. I got to class and I do my test and I take notes but it’s not me. I think it’s just muscles memory,” said Baptiste.
Farah showed many family photos as she explained how she is coping.
Farah’s ward has been fasting, praying, and providing meals regularly. Tracy Robbins in particular identified with Farah.
“I couldn’t take it away. I realized that this scripture just came to me was you know, mourn with those that mourn and comfort those that stand in need of comfort’. That my responsibility was to mourn with her and comfort her,” said Robbins.
In Response Farah stated, “The fact that they believe in me makes me want to do more. Makes me want to keep on trying. Keep on going forward that it happened it had my Heavenly Father knows my needs.”
On Jan. 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, causing the loss of over 150,000 lives, according to a preliminary assessment from Haiti's government on Jan 23. This unfortunate occurrence has touched the whole world at large and sparked concern amongst people all over the world, including several students at BYU-Idaho.
Two students — Gina Dorson, a Haitian-American recent convert and sophomore from Florida; and Adam Bouka, a freshman of African descent from Montreal, Canada — teamed up to organize a fundraiser and care kit project to aid the survivors of the disaster-stricken people of Haiti.
On Friday, Jan. 29th, 2010, the group will hold a fundraising dance at the Old Cajun Bob's. The entry cost is $6 and every dollar will be donated toward the support of the survivors in Haiti.
“I've lost five cousins from this earthquake and some are still missing,” Dorson said. “My family is having a hard time coping with our loss, but thank goodness I have a strong testimony of the Plan of Salvation. I've been a member [of the Church] for two years now. When Elders go on a mission and they return and they say it’s the best two years of their lives. I can truly say it’s been the best two years of my life too.
Dorson’s background has contributed to her desire to serve.
“I am the youngest of three children,” she said. “I come from a Catholic background. My parents are still Catholic till today. I have faith that one day they will accept the gospel in their lives. While in college I plan to volunteer in my community. I will not give up. I will put a 100% effort into my work. What makes me stand above the rest is the desire and heart that I have allowed myself to overcome any obstacles and strive for the best. The desire and heart to work well with others, and most importantly the desire and heart to work hard.”
Bouka attributes his desire to serve to his heritage.
Adam Bouka said, “I was really devastated when I learned about the tragedy that occurred in Haiti. I am not Haitian, but I want [my Haitian friends] to know that as Christians and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we care for our brothers. I know that the Church has already helped a lot. I have learned that there are times to pray and worship, but there are times when we need to get moving and help and give to people that are in need.”
Bouka has teamed up with several organizations and institutions to organize a fundraising dance party for this cause.
“How we got to mobilize that many people in such a short time, I don’t really know. I really think that the Lord prepared the way.”
Bouka met a promoter of events in Rexburg, who assure that everything necessary for the fundraiser was donated: the facilties, the DJ, the lighting and sound equipment and the flyers..The promoter also contacted the American Red Cross, and other non-profit associations.
The volunteers are expecting over a thousand people,” Bouka said. “With a goal of at least $6000 to help the people of Haiti, these student volunteers are genuinely putting their shoulders to the wheel of righteousness and humanitarian service.”
Others expressed their enthusiasm for the project.
Jeff Beck, a freshman from Oregon, said, “It is the attitude that matters. Even though it is something small, we are taking care of the children of God in Haiti who need help. But we just feel good that we will be able to contribute a little bit to help our brothers.”
He also cited the Relief Society slogan, “Charity Never Faileth.”
“I really think that we need to care for each other,” Beck said. “I don't want to be only someone that says they aspire to become a disciple of Christ, but someone that shows it by his actions. This is one of the things I have learned since I have been at BYU-I. This is only my third week here in Rexburg, but I love it because there is a special spirit here.”
All through this week, flyers will be handed out to various apartments around campus to create enough awareness of this project.
Madison Fire Department is participating in the Uniforms, Kids and Lunch program, hoping to raise fire safety awareness among children.
Uniforms, Kids and Lunch gives firefighters the opportunity to eat lunch with their children or other children at schools in the community.
“I think it’s the power of influence. We want to get these guys out in the community,” said Corey Child, Madison’s Chief of Emergency Services.
At least once a week members go out to the schools their children attend or go as a group to visit a particular school.
“I went to my son’s school. It wasn’t just fun for us, but everyone. He was on cloud nine,” said firefighter Ellis Johnston.
The program isn’t just about fun though; the fire department has other goals in mind.
“In the past we’ve kind of kept to ourselves, haven’t really gone into the community. But it’s important for them to see we’re helping people not just in medical trouble or in burning buildings. We want them to be familiar with us,” said Mikel Walker, assistant chief of emergency services.
Usually when the kids see the firefighters they have lots of questions. Johnston said they included some safety questions and curiosities about the job.
“They want to know if it’s scary running into a burning building. They want to know if the hose is heavy. They are really just little chatterboxes,” Johnston said.
Walker said one of the primary benefits is what the kids get from the experience.
“We want to give them a positive role model. Our station has really good morals and we want to give them someone they can look up to with high morals and values,” he said.
Walker said the program has a good chance of continuing. It started at the beginning of the month and was supposed to end in a couple of days, but he’s not sure that will happen.
“We want to continue the program as long as we can get guys out there,” Walker said.
Walker also talked about the overwhelming positive experience he’s had with Uniforms, Kids and Lunch.
“I love kids. When we go into schools they all want to sit at our table, they want to high-five us and give us knuckles. It’s one of the rewarding parts of our job,” he said.
Uniforms, Kids and Lunch is changing the way kids think. Johnston said he could see it in his son.
“First thing when he woke up he said, ‘OK Dad, see you at lunch!’ That was at six in the morning; it was the first thing on his mind.”
Johnston thinks the change is because of the confidence the program brings.
“It really builds their confidence when we come; it shows them we care and that we’re there for them. That is the best part for me, seeing the looks on their faces.”
As a disclaimer, I'm writing as a BYU-Provo student. I honestly never considered going to BYU-Idaho even though many of my friends did. Why? Because BYU-Idaho has yet to establish a reputable four-year university. After getting a degree from BYU, I recognize that degrees mean very little unless the degree is Ivy League, but there's definitely a difference in the quality of education that accompanies the degree, depending on the institution. I cannot speak for BYU-Idaho, its education, or its professors, but I can say that BYU-Provo provides a better education for the price than BYU-Idaho does. You could try proving the opposite, but the only reasoning that would hold any water would be class size differential, which isn't even that great.
Location was the other major factor for me. Idaho is nice. I used to live there. However, given the fact that I knew I wanted to attend a church school, I wanted to be more centrally located to opportunity, which I find more of in Utah Valley than in Idaho. Don't believe me? Just look at any Utah directory and you'll see that there are many businesses, large and small, providing opportunities for work, learning, and growth to BYU students - many more here than in Idaho. People who go to BYU-Idaho obviously have reasons for doing so, but for my life goals and ambitions, I think I chose well.
I first off would like to answer my own question and say that I am open to all comments on this subject. I have been talking to a lot of people about this very same subject for a number of years now and I believe that BYU-I needs to have it's own social network that the students are required to be apart of.
We are half way there with having I-Learn. I-Learn has WIKI and Blog options that the teachers can utilize to get comments about certain topics from the students and the can hold discussion boards. I know, I know, I-Learn still has a lot of kinks that they need to work out and also is the cause of a lot of stress for the students on campus especially when it comes to taking tests, quizes and submitting homework.
I feel that if we were able to create a social network on campus this would open up so many more oportunities for students to stay connected with their classmates and be able to learn from eachother. This would also require the staff to be members of the nework so they would be more available to help out their students. The teachers would probably think that this is a terrible idea because they wouldn't want to be checking their email and get a bunch of instant messages from their students who are struggling but what would the difference be than them receiving messages by instant messages rather than emails.
I know I-Learn actually has this option already that many people (ok, the majority of the campus) don't know about. There is a way for the teacher to have a status option so when they are at their desk logged into their BYU-I account the students can see that and they can send instant messages to their teacher. So why not incorporate this and let teach the teachers how to stay up-to-date with today's intercommunications technology. I think we are about 75% of the way there to creating a social nework that actually is effective for a college student. There are just a few minor tweeks that need to be done and we would be able to be a more successfull campus. I would really like to know what everyone else has to say about this and get as many opinions on this matter. Who knows this could turn out to be a proposal that would initiate one of the biggest innovations that happen on this campus.
Have you ever contemptuously thought to yourself that those playing sports video games should go play a “real” sport? “To most people it’s a video game, to me it’s a dream come true,” said Hans Smith, a junior studying communication, of the upcoming release of MLB:10 The Show, which will feature his image as a player in the game. Smith’s dream is to become a radio baseball commentator. Smith also has cerebral palsy, which confines him to a wheelchair and affects his hands and arms, making physical participation in sporting activities all but impossible. “Your disability is what you have, not who you are,” Smith said. “Your mind determines your reality. Now I can be me. Now I can be a baseball player.” Smith has loved baseball since early childhood and remembers when his two older brothers explained the games to him as they would listen together on the radio. “We were one of five families [in the country] who didn’t have cable TV,” Smith said. Later, when his parents bought him a Sega Genesis so he could play baseball video games, Smith surprised his family by beating his two brothers. Owing to his physical disability, Smith’s parents had doubted his ability to use the video game controller. “I absolutely killed ‘em,” Smith said. This started Smith’s career of “virtual baseball.” Not all baseball games, however, are alike to Smith. In the fall of 2007, when Smith saw a commercial for MLB:08 The Show, he knew it was better than what he had been playing. “This game was unbelievable,” Smith said. Along with excellent graphics and a first-person play mode, “you had to read coaches’ signs … [and know] when to be in position for a double feature.” The new game more fully recreated the feeling of being an actual baseball player. Smith was sold, and he got rid of his Xbox in order to be able to purchase and play the new game on the PlayStation 3. Little did he know that his decision to buy this game would lead to him being a “part of the action” in more ways than he expected. “I decided to play a whole 162-game series,” Smith said. “About the middle of the season I realized I would be extremely ungrateful if I didn’t thank [the makers of the game].” “I wanted to write Sony … to tell them how much I appreciated their game,” Smith said. “[When I wrote to them] I said you have given me an opportunity to do something that I would do in real life, but I can’t because of something that is out of my control.” The senior director of the MLB game franchise for Sony called Smith in response to his letter. He told Smith how grateful they were for Smith’s expression of gratitude. “[He said] ‘we would like to make your dream of being a baseball player even more a reality,’” Smith said. This then followed with a trip to the studio in San Diego, where Smith had his head scanned with a 360 degree camera and his voice recorded. Sony even agreed that his player, which bears his name, will continue in the game every year until the franchise ends. This means that how Smith performs in his virtual MLB season this year will affect the statistics of Hans Smith the baseball player in next year’s game, just as with real Major League players. “This is like my rookie year,” Smith said. Even as he begins his baseball career, Smith tries to avoid placing too much emphasis on himself. “I think what [this article] does more than [telling] my glamorous story is showing the power of gratitude,” Smith said. “It’s the power of saying thanks.” Smith is also thankful to God for blessings he has received. “Several times I have actually prayed to Heavenly Father and told Him how thankful I am that I can play baseball,” Smith said. When he begins his season sometime after the game is released on March 2, Smith says he plans on entering the draft. His player is a catcher. He will then play the season, never compromising the reality of the experience or his 13 credit homework load by playing more than one game per day. At least one pre-season game will give friends and potential fans the opportunity to see their player up close and in person. The Reading Center, where Smith works part time, plans to have a party for him when the game comes out, said Department Faculty Julie Engstrom. There will be a big-screen baseball field to boot, and Smith is looking forward to some spectators. “One thing I can’t simulate in a baseball game,” Smith said, “is the crowd.”
A pick-up line is used as a potential icebreaker or a conversation starter and can range from the simple “hi” to the longer phrases like, “If you were Spock’s phaser, you would be set to stun.”
How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice. Breaking the ice with a pick-up line seems like a good way to start a conversation because it usually breaks the tension by getting the other person to laugh. But what do BYU-Idaho students think about pick-up lines?
“I can tell you I don’t think they work. I think they are funny though,” said Jenny Bourne, a freshman studying communication. Jenny said that one of her friends had an experience in which a boy said, “Hey, you look like someone I know.” Her friend found out later that she didn’t look like anyone he knew; he just wanted an excuse to begin a conversation.
Pick-up lines have evolved from generic lines that can be used on anyone, like, “If I could rearrange the alphabet I would put U and I together,” to more specialized pick-up lines that will only make sense to the people who are savvy on certain subjects.
These are a few examples of specialized pick-up lines; For a Harry Potter fan, you might try, “I know we're not in Professor Flitwick's class, but you still are charming;” or for the Twilight fanatic, “You look imprintable…I mean uhh…impeccable in that outfit.” The physics major might respond to, “Can I have your significant digits?” While the math major would prefer, “Hey baby, what's your sine?” For the science fiction lovers try something like, “Tell me of this thing you humans call (pause) love,” In a religion class, try, “Is your name Virtue? Because you garnish my thoughts unceasingly,” these and tons more.
Better save this one for the summer time: “Man it’s hot outside, but you just made it 10 degrees hotter.” Cameron Bassett, a sophomore studying exercise physiology, said yes, he has used a pick-up line before, and he had the girl’s number when he came away from the conversation. Basset said, “It’s more fun, just a joke to break the ice.”
“Did it hurt (Pause) when you fell from heaven?”
Ben Anderson, a junior studying economics, said, “I usually just go for compliments.” Anderson gave an example of a compliment he would use: “Has anyone told you that you have the most dazzling eyes?”
Pick-up lines can be fun icebreakers and great for jokes amongst friends. General pick-up lines can be used on anyone but be sure to do the research before using a more specialized pick-up line. Don’t feel pressure to deliver pick-up lines in a particular way they are meant to be light hearted and fun anyway.

Students attending Brigham Young University – Idaho come from across the country and across the world, each student bringing their own ‘slang’ to share with the campus. Here are some common words and phrases that can be heard around BYU-I Do:
IF: Idaho Falls. The place to go if you need to shop, eat or be entertained. Idaho Falls is approximately 30 minutes away from Brigham Young University-Idaho and considered to be the closest civilization to campus. Most common use is “Let’s go to IF for dinner tonight.”
DTR: define the relationship. This process usually involves a long talk and some awkward moments. Will they become official, or should the relationship come to a halt? An example of this acronym would be: “We need to DTR.” Or, "They had a DTR last night."
Hecka: a substitute word for “‘really’” or “‘extremely.’” Most commonly used by Californians. Chandler Burrows, a freshman majoring in general studies, started using hecka so she wouldn’t get in trouble at school. “Everyone says it, especially in northern California. Hecka sounds more proper.” Makelle Alldrege, a freshman studying health science said: “I will never stop saying hecka. I will say hecka in heaven.” An example of the word hecka in a sentence would be: “I’m hecka nervous right now.”
Devo: abbreviation for devotional. An event that takes place each Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hart auditorium. An example of this word in a sentence would be: “Are you going to devo today?”
Dear John: the process of sending a letter to a missionary out in the field informing that you no longer wish to be with them. It can also refer to the act of being broken up by letter while on your mission. For example, “I got dear-johned.”
FOF: Friends on Facebook. “FOF is the new BFF,” said Emerson Parsons, a sophomore studying sociology. “It just signifies the fact that people’s Facebook relationships matter more than their physical real-life relationships. I think it’s ridiculous that some people don’t think anything is official until it is Facebook official.” An example of this word in a sentence is “Are we FOF yet?”
Stalker-net: refers to the BYU–I student directory. This online directory supplies you with everything you could want to know about someone and more: name, email, home address and even a photo. To access the stalker-net, go to www.byui.edu, click on directories, then click on students and then stalk away. An example of this term in a sentence would be: “I looked you up on stalker-net.”

Girls and Boys Girls and Boys
Once upon a time, there were boys. They made up fifty percent of the Earth’s population, and everywhere you looked, they would appear. Boys roamed the planet with girls, and if there were women around, the amount of men nearby could, and almost always would, triple.
But, this tale isn’t about girls; it’s about the boys in their lives. This is the untold story of how girls truly feel about boyfriends, relationships with guys in general, and the qualities that separate the men from the boys. Follow as we take a trip through the confusing forests of relationships, and just through that other end is the castle, where your Prince Charming or Princess awaits.
When it comes to determining the knights in shining armor among the stable hands, one thing sets them apart – personal hygiene. Women would like boys in general to be clean. After all, cleanliness is next to godliness. Please shower on a regular basis - thanks, we’d really appreciate it. And when it comes to wardrobe, girls don’t expect your clothes to be expensive and fancy, because they aren’t shallow. But, we would appreciate it if your armor actually fit you, instead of hanging halfway off of your rear end. It’s nice to see a man who can take care of himself. Of course, we love you for what’s on the inside, but we also love it when you take some extra effort to look your best for us.
We as princesses would also request that you take care of your bodies in the physical sense. Being healthy is important, and if you show us you care about your bodies, it means that you have your priorities straight – not caring about yourself shows you don’t care about anything else, either. You don’t have to be the next barbarian, but it impresses us when you implement exercise into your life. And what impresses us even more? Include us in your workouts! Staying healthy together is a good way to bond and strengthen (no pun intended) our relationship.
When it comes to physical appearance, ladies as a generalization prefer a prince who is clean-shaven. There are times when it’s appropriate (if you’re trying to start a career as a mountain man or you just returned from a weekend hunt) but for the most part women don’t like cuddling with a porcupine. Unless you’re Brad Pitt, you probably can’t pull it off anyways. We as future queens know that it’s a pride thing – you grow your beard to show dominance and to prove that you are manly enough to have facial hair to begin with. But we also like you to be presentable in society, and dating Sir Scruffy is not ideal.
Along with physical appearance, women have this general rule: when it comes to your behavior, please PLEASE don’t share with us what you had to eat for lunch by belching repeatedly. Once or twice is excusable, but fifty times is toxic. Your bodily functions are less and less amusing the more we have to endure them. The same goes for farting, but less. The less princesses know about that, the better. They are just not interested. These sorts of things are appropriate when you’re just hanging with the other knights, but we are your female counterparts and we would just like to imagine that your life is gas-free.
Your hobbies and interests are things that we are interested in, however. We might not be die-hard jousting fans, but we don’t mind watching with you once in a while without complaining. You shouldn’t expect your significant other to start liking everything that you do, though, because it will NOT happen. And we feel the same way - we have our interests, and you have yours. It’s okay to be different and have different tastes, just as long as there are some similarities in there too. After all, opposites attract!
Quality time together allows knights and ladies-in-waiting to develop their hobbies together, and to see what sorts of things they have in common with each other. So, let’s spend some time together. Please? We love being with you. If we didn’t we wouldn’t be dating you. Courting is like hanging out with your best friend but with more romance involved. So take us out to do something, because we like to get out and try new things. We might be deathly afraid of that giant spider in the corner, but we definitely have a sense of adventure.
Don’t worry about impressing us, because we’re already with you. Going on dates doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, and we don’t expect you to whip out your scepter or bag of gold coins every time we want to do something. As long as we’re together us ladies don’t care what we’re doing. Stargazing, picnics, taking a walk, and just relaxing with friends…it’s the simple things that matter.
We like being with you all the time, but we need time for our ladies maid’s, and you need to be with the Knights of the Round Table, too. Hanging out with your guy friends is encouraged, and as long as you let us know ahead of time that you have plans with the guys, we don’t care. Women love seeing their boyfriend with their family and friends, because it means that they have their priorities straight. Friends are important - don’t forget about them! They’ve been there for everything, from that time you got food poisoning on the trip to Camelot, or when your pet snake ‘slithered off’ while you were away at jousting camp. Try to balance the time you spend with them and us, otherwise you’ll have some unhappy best buddies.
Including us in your plans with the other knights will win you big-time brownie points. Women want to know how you interact in your friend circles while in a relationship. Approval from both ends is very important. It’s crucial to us to have our girlfriends like you, so you should be on your best behavior because the approval of them can heavily influence our decision on whether to behead you around or not. The same goes with your friends. We want your buddies to like us, so we can stick around.
Meeting your friends is nothing in comparison to meeting the King and Queen for the first time. This is the part that makes all girls nervous. It’s like meeting the friends, only ten times worse because it’s really the family’s opinion that can make your relationship sink or swim. If the family hates the princess, then your relationship is almost always in deep trouble. So, be supportive and sympathetic. Help us to relax by telling us stories about your family, and giving us hints on how to fit in. If Duke Jerry likes pineapples, let us know so we can get him one as a gift. If Lady Susie had a bad experience with the color red, warn us so we don’t wear it. By helping us to know the ins and outs of your family, we’ll feel much more at ease when the time comes to meet them.
We’ll do the same for you, as well, because we want our relationship to work. If you’re meeting each other’s families, it’s kind of a big deal. Princesses love their family, they love watching you with your family, and they would do anything to fit in with them. Meeting the family is similar to a job interview, except it lasts for hours with people you potentially could be related to for the rest of your life.
After you made it through all the twists and turns of the forest of relationships, you’ve finally arrived at the castle where the beautiful princess or handsome prince awaits. With these helpful ideas and informative facts about how women felt, the knights were able to leave their tool days behind to form healthy relationships without hurting their chances with the ladies in the future, and the princesses were capable of giving them that chance. And they all lived happily ever after.

Love at First Sight?
Right before I really started getting to know Tim, I was one of those tragic “Love isn’t for me- my last boyfriend broke me for good” types of girl. I wasn’t interested in love at all, in fact, I would categorize myself as being pessimistic towards it. The fist day I met Tim in Math 108, I purposefully put my backpack in the seat next to me so that no one would sit by me. When the teacher sent around the assigned seating chart to fill out, I practically rejoiced for being the lucky girl with the extra space around her. Then Tim came rushing in, and of course spotted and made his way towards the one chair I was praying he would miss. He had no idea, but he already had hit strike one. Strike two was when he started talking to the teacher like they were best friends (I had no idea at the time they worked together developing an online class). And strike three was that he had an English accent. I knew the girls must just go crazy for that, which would mean he HAD to let it get to his head, and if there was one thing I didn’t like- it was boys who thought too much of themselves (the prideful do always think it’s everyone else besides them). I could already tell this was going to be a long first block class.
I was taking 23 credits and working the 4 am campus janitorial job at the time. So it shouldn’t be a surprise when I say—there were a few Math classes I just could NOT wake up for. After I missed two in a row (of a first block class) I knew I needed help catching up. So, I knew I would have to talk to the boy beside me in class. Luckily, he was nice about helping out, so I invited him over for food (I’m Southern- that’s what I do!)
Love at First Sight?
Yep, this is BYU Idaho; strange things happen here. It was my first day of school for over 4 years and my first day of school in the USA. My sister had registered my classes and enrolled me in the Math 108 block class… ughh!!!! I’d been home from my mission for a year and girls were just not on the agenda; I was in a new country, a new school and a totally new environment. We all sat down in random seats and Bro. Goodwin made a seating chart – we were locked in our places for the next 7 weeks! So, yes you’ve guessed it, Rebecca and I were sat next to each other… and it was not love at first sight… it probably tilted the other way in fact! We didn’t speak much the first few weeks but towards the end of the block we’d reached a more jovial conversation. We were both busy and even dating was not on our minds, but She did invite me and another classmate to hers one day for some food and to help her with some work she’d missed out on. I was quietly impressed with her Southern hospitality and cooking skills!
Destiny: not in chance but in choice
After the block ended, I think Tim started stalking me—looking for free handouts for more food no doubt. After “randomly bumping” into each other and going to President Eyring’s Devotional together, I think we both realized we had a lot more in common than taking Math 108 in the same block. Then, the e-mails started. He was exactly what a girl who was too scared to get involved again needed. He e-mailed me in the mornings, telling me to have a good day and to ask what I was going to do. After I would tell him my plans, he would e-mail asking me what I had done so far and if he could come over after he went to work that evening (but always adding in he didn’t want to bother me and I should say no if I wanted). Then he would stop by for a couple hours and we would just talk for a couple hours. He was everything I said I was looking for. He never forgot to open a door, he got to know me before he even tried to hold my hand, he brought my roommates presents (ones from the heart, not just ones he bought), he played board games and sports with me instead of just sitting on the couch. And most of all- he always was standing up for what he thought was right and knew more about the gospel better than any other 22 year old I had ever met.
My roommate and I had a hard time believing that Tim was genuine. From past experience, no one was this great. After our first official date, I thought it was for sure over. We hadn’t really talked much like we did when we were at my apartment- that had to be a sign we would only work as friends. Oh well- I knew that love wasn’t for me anyways.
Destiny: not in chance but in choice
After the block class was over we started bumping into each other frequently in random places; at the Romney, Porter Park, in the halls and on the way to see Elder Eyring at Devotional. We had no one else to go with so sat next to each other for an hour before devotional started. From my perspective we had a great conversation and I started to take a heightened interest in this Tennessean cowgirl. By this time we’d started a casual e-mail correspondence and started playing walleyball together a couple times a week. If nothing else, I was happy to have a fun friend to spend a couple hours with instead of just doing study and work.
The Courting Journey
A couple of days later, Tim told me how much he truly liked me. Since I didn’t really want to like him- I had a hard time admitting out loud that I liked him too. So while I was trying to get comfortable with liking him, he thought I was rejecting him. For the next week we stayed in contact, but a whole lot less. It was the day he came over and asked my roommate for a bike ride I was about to call him out on being a player. And so that night I wrote him an e-mail asking for an explanation. He wrote back apologizing for hurting my feelings and came over that day. After talking it through, I realized there had just been difficulty in both of us expressing our feelings out loud. We started dating.
For a girl who thought love isn’t a fairytale, Timothy sure swept me off my feet. Every girl wants a man like mine- even if she doesn’t know it. I didn’t know men like Tim were still around to be honest. He picked me a flower everyday when he walked over to my apartment. He said prayers with me at night. He cut out stories from the Church News and found small quotes everywhere and would tape them to my door so I could always find them and smile. He felt the same way on the important subjects of life as I did, and when we didn’t agree we always talked about it and found a way to see eye to eye. He always built everyone up around him and really didn’t think he ever did enough for me- yet every night he left I was awestruck he saw something in me he liked. I still am today. I’ve come to the realization that yes, he’s far from perfect—but he sure is perfect for me.
The Courting Journey
Not surprisingly we felt comfortable together and every so often something we said would strike in the other’s mind. I hadn’t taken a girl out on a date since before my mission but finally had the desire to formally plan and ask Rebecca out on a double date… she said yes of course and the next Friday we enjoyed an “Amazing Race” scavenger hunt with one of my work colleagues and his date. We had a great time but I was still not interested in any relationship; I was just enjoying Becca’s jovial company, and continued with our weekly walleyball sessions.
Eventually one Thursday evening I was sent an email telling me I needed to decide the direction of the relationship – the next day we had a “DTR” and we started our journey together; this was my first “girlfriend” so it was fun to start something new and be shown the ropes of how to be a good boyfriend. We were both working in Rexburg for the Summer and enjoyed spending time with friends and each other. I think most guys take a cautious position when dating… questions of commitment; preparation and ability to provide are strong factors in the strength of continuity in a relationship headed towards marriage. I had my nerves and doubts and Becca made me choose whether to continue or back out forever – I think girls nearly always know quicker than us guys what the score is! She knew what she wanted and talked to me pretty straight… I didn’t want to make a decision but realized that if I was to continue I would have to choose to be in love. And that’s what I chose.
Engagement
The engagement story was amazing. But the engagement process—not so much. After the difficulties of finding a place to live, getting a car, completing your schoolwork, going to your job, fitting in the extra activities we had dedicated ourselves to prior to the engagement for school, and doing all the necessary checklist item---- we started to realize we couldn’t do it all. We both found ourselves emotionally drained before we could even say hello at nights. So, we did what we had to do in order to stay sane. We eloped (as much as you can with a temple wedding anyways). We decided we would just get married in 3 weeks and whoever could make it was welcome to come—we’d be there and that’s all that matters.
Engagement
The new semester started and I settled in more to the mindset of marriage. We both knew we would get married but didn’t know when or how. It was hard finding time to be together to make arrangements and things; finding a ring wasn’t too hard but thinking how to propose was quite the ordeal. I’ve always believed proposals should be well thought out and special… after all, it only happens once! A few ideas failed to blossom but I eventually found opportunity at the weekend of General Conference. We’d never been before and so we went down with my family for the weekend. On the Saturday evening I took Rebecca out to the Melting Pot fondue restaurant; on previous trips to SLC she’d always said she’d love to eat there… after the meal I arranged to have a horse and carriage pick us up and take us around the city before we ended up in County Creek Park where we’d taken a walk a few months earlier. I’m pretty sure by now she knew what was going on. I produced a scrapbook Id made of our courtship so far and did the manly thing, got down on one knee with a diamond ring and asked her to marry me. I’d say it went rather well!
Eternal Love
The wedding day I was completely fine- until I got to the Bountiful temple and couldn’t find Tim. I went to the underground parking while he went to the parking in front. When I found myself in alone in the lobby with all these other brides beside me with their groom, I practically started hyperventilating. The nervousness every other bride feels on the day finally hit. I almost started bawling right there at the welcome desk. Eventually, Tim & I found each other. And after about a half hour, I was completely at peace again. I had found my eternal love.
Eternal Love
We originally planned to get married in our off-track in January but due to complications and stress in planning we brought the date forward and planned a simple wedding in three weeks. We always wanted to ensure we concentrated on the marriage and not the wedding, and were sealed for time and all eternity on 21st November, 2009 in the Bountiful Utah Temple. After the sealing we exchanged rings and engraved on the inside of mine were the beautiful words “Eternal Love.”
It was quite the journey to get there but I’m elated to be able to start a new one now with the one I truly love. Now every day is a whole new love story in itself.

Complaint about the plasma center. I feel many in the community would like to know that this took place.
On June 11 2009, around 10:30 am. I was treated to the horrific spectacle while at the plasma center. It was the first few minutes of the movie “The Kingdom”. When the movie started, it warned the audience before it got to far into the film that it was indeed rated R. Then the “fun” starts. A group of men begin gunning down innocent men, women, and children in graphic detail. Quickly followed by a suicide bombing where more people get torn to pieces by shrapnel from the blast. I approached the counter and confront them about the rating of the film, and publicly showing it in an mainly LDS community. The girl at the counter assures me that it’s the “Clean Flicks” version, and that its safe to show. Assuming that I was being told the truth, I allowed them to plug me into the machine, at that point I would be forced to stay for the duration of the procedure.
Clean flicks boasts “No Graphic Violence, No Graphic Sexuality, and No Harsh Profanity” (taken from the clean flicks website). After being plugged in, the movie hit a slow point, and I began to relax. About 20 minutes later, the action picks up, and it becomes very obvious that this is not the Clean flicks version ( I later went online and discovered, that there never was a clean flicks version of the movie made). With more blood, violence, and cussing then I ever saw or heard in my two years as an EMT.
So here I am, plugged into a machine that’s attached to my circulatory system, so I cant just get up and leave. With a rated R movie on display on close to a dozen TV‘s. I would think that in a mainly LDS community, a company would have enough respect for the company’s patrons and the community to refrain from such behavior. It is also my understanding that the majority of those employed there are also LDS. Why was this movie being shown? Was it just to sate an employs sick idea of entertainment? So there I was, getting paid to watch a rated R movie. If a friend offered my $50 to watch a similar movie, I would out right refuse. Wouldn’t most of us refuse as well? Why was no one saying anything? When the machine had finished. I demanded to see the movies case, to determine its version and rating. Even if it was the clean flicks version (which to my knowledge and the clean flicks web site, there is none) that kind of movie should not have been shown publicly in this community. With little money in hand and my peace of mind in the trash. I left feeling insulted and betrayed. Its not worth my morals and virtues for $50 a week, or any monetary value for that matter. I will never support a company that treats me and others in such a manner where we have to sell our moral values.

The Crossroads The Crossroads
The Crossroads is not just another dining center. It is a place where students can eat, study and socialize, according to university officials.
“It is in the middle of campus, the crossroads of campus,” said Greg Carson, food services manager.
Meant to be the campus premier dining facility, The Crossroads, is located on the second floor of the Hyrum Manwaring Center and is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It has 1,250 seats. The Crossroads opened on Monday, Sept. 7, for the first time.
“Our design process for The Crossroads started 4.5 years ago,” said Rulon Nielson, Director of Facility Planning & Construction.
Bryce Kendrick, a freshman studying health, said he likes The Crossroads better than the dining area at his previous college, Utah State University.
“It’s a lot bigger and easier to pick food because it’s not all in one line,” Kendrick said.
There are seven different food lines to choose from. The variety of food ranges from Mexican cuisine to brick oven pizza.
“The way it was designed was to bring cooking out of the kitchen and in front of the students. This way, it is not only traditional dining, but educational as well,” Carson said.
The food is not the only reason why many students might want to check out The Crossroads. With a bowling alley underneath a large dining area and a stage on the north side, some believe it’s a great place to hang out.
“I love the change… I think it’d be a great date place,” said Gayle Dye, a junior studying elementary education.
The determination to reconstruct the campus came from President Clark and other General Church Leaders. This facility was designed specifically for students’ needs, Nielson said.

City streets that have been free parking now require a small red and white permit that hangs from the rear-view mirror of a vehicle. The university permits, issued by the City of Rexburg, cost $15 per semester or $35 per year.
Reactions to these changes have varied. Some students are suspicious.
“I just want to know why they are doing this, because it seems like they are doing it just to make a quick buck,” said Cody Pettersen, a sophomore studying business management.
The Rexburg City Council, which oversaw the planning and implementing of the new law, hopes that the regulations will be beneficial for everyone.
City Council President Christopher Mann said that the city had several reasons for making the changes. Working closely with university officials, the City Council researched other college-towns’ parking regulations such as Provo, Utah; Laramie, Wyoming; and Logan, Utah.
“This is not a unique solution, as it has been tried in other communities with similar sized schools with an effective outcome,” said city clerk Blair D. Kay.
President Mann also responded to criticism by some that the city had ulterior motives for the new parking regulations.
“Something had to be done,” Mann said. “We were fearing for the safety of the students. Our goal is not to make money.”
The funds collected from the sale of permits go to the city’s general fund.
“It’s less than a drop in a bucket,” Mann said. “Our police budget is over 2.2 million.”
As of Thursday, Sept. 11, all residential and university permits were sold out.
Included in the new regulations are rules on how vehicles should be parked. Along many streets, drivers are now required to back in the diagonal space.
Bring Back the Boogie Man, You Bring Back the Boogie Man, You Know, For the Kids
For example, I have this idea that parenting is a lot like the free market. When businesses compete for your money, you get the best service available at the best price possible.
Likewise, children should compete for their parent’s love. If you’re a parent like me, you know that there’s a limit on how much you can love. And, because there’s a high demand from children for the love of their parents, you can bet that they will be willing to compete for it.
On FHE days, instead of having a board that lists who’s going to pray, share the scripture and provide refreshments, I’m going to have a ranking board that lists my favorite child to my least favorite. It’s kind of like a Dow Jones Industrial average for love.
In this way, my children will always know where they stand with me. The top child will, of course, have more privileges than the other children. And, the bottom child will have more punishments. You know, the normal punishments: smaller food portions, more chores, constant looks of disapproval and disappointment, and of course the obligatory, “Why couldn’t you be more like your brother/sister” statements.
If the free market is good enough for America, the land I love, why couldn’t it work for families? Not to mention, when you give children privileges they didn’t earn, they begin to feel a sense of entitlement. They lose perspective on what it means to really work for something. And, they lose the pride that comes with achievement. They just come to expect everything for free.
I don’t know any parent who loves their children freely.
Medical care is a perfect example. With the rising costs of healthcare these days, what better incentive is there for children than to compete for it? Say you have three kids; the best thing to do is to purchase health plans for the top two children. Basically what you’re doing here is using the time proven economic principle of scarcity. By making an essential resource limited, you can bet your children are going to do everything within their power to make certain they can get that vaccine for polio.
Some of you are probably saying, “C’mon, as a parent, if your child gets sick you’re going to do everything within your power to make sure they get better.”
This is true. But what you also need to do is constantly remind your child that even when they didn’t deserve to be taken to the emergency room, you took them anyway. This is how they will learn how much you really love them.
Another idea I had for loving and effective parenting is to keep your children in constant fear of the boogieman. Growing up, my mother would threaten me and tell me that if I didn’t eat my rice, the boogieman would come to get me. This was effective at first, but over time, when the boogieman wouldn’t show up, the threat lost its inherent power. But, imagine if she had just taken it a step further.
Imagine this, you tell your child that if they don’t eat their rice the boogieman will get them when they sleep. That night, after they’re fast asleep, you go to your closet, you put on the gorilla suit you bought at the D.I. for $10.95, and you march yourself into your child’s room and you scare them. You scare them until they wet their pants.
That will teach them to eat their rice. Either that, or they’ll have an irrational fear of suburban gorillas. Either way, they will think twice before doubting you.Roller Coaster not always safe Roller Coaster not always safe...
On Monday afternoon a Mechanical failure on a roller coaster at the amusement park "Great America" located in Santa Clara, California, left 24 people standed for hours on the ride, some as high as 80 feet off the ground. According to Augie Wiedemann, deputy fire chief of the city, the ride was ascending to the highest point of the ride, actually where it begins, and then it just stopped. Affortunatly no injuries were reported, the Invertigo ride stopped about 12:15 pm. (3:15 pm. ET) and passangers were stuck for at least three hours.
Firefighters were removing passangers from the ride's restraint system and lowering them into a basket at the top of a fire truck, the last passangers got off the ride by 5:45 pm. However, this was not the only incident happening during this month. On June 10th in Hot Springs, Ark.-A power outage left a dozen riders on an amusement park rolecoaster suspended upside down while firefighters and workers scramble to recue them. A fuse blew out at Magic Springs & Crystal Falls bringing several rides to a halt Saturday evening.
On the X-Coaster, 12 riders waited upside down at the highest point, 150 feet in the air, before they were returned safely to the ground. The X-Coaster's two cars were at the peak of a giant loop.The Hot Springs fire department used a ladder truck to rescue the riders, and spectators cheered when riders reached the ground. Authorities said that the rescue took about 30 minutes and emergency medical personnel examined all the roller-coaster riders after they came down.
Dan Aylward, Magic Springs president and general manager, said the theme park has experienced outages in the past, but usually they last only seconds. Entery Corp is investigating the cause of the outage near the park. Crews could find no faulty wiring. Now you know, there might be a slight chance that the adrenaline in roller coaster rides can last longer than couple seconds.

Opening in mid-December, the new frozen yogurt venue in Rexburg has had a surprising turnout of customers. Despite the cold weather Twizl Berry has an environment that seems to accommodate those of all ages. Whether people need a nice treat or a break from their daily lives, Twizl Berry seems to do both for you. To diversify from the rest of the economy Twizl Berry tends to show diversity in the choices you can make there. Even though budgets are tight for everyone, Twizl Berry still seems to rake in the customers to its business.This establishment has over 40 toppings and a diverse variety of flavors to choose from. Parking around Campus: The Who Parking around Campus: The Whole Enchilada

With all the changes in parking regulations that have taken place on and around campus at the start of a new semester, some might feel like a driver’s ed student trying to learn to parallel park.
Students and faculty at Brigham Young University – Idaho are returning to three different sets of changes for parking on and around campus.
1. Extending parking areas requiring an “A” or “B” permit to some streets surrounding campus.
2. “University” permits sold by the City of Rexburg are now required for parking on many city streets around campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
3. “Residential” permits sold by the City of Rexburg are required for parking on many city streets that are in residential areas close to campus.
Streets like West 450 S. and S. Center Street that run in front of the Taylor Chapel now require a “B” parking permit. This permit, $10 from the University Parking Office, is the same that most students buy to park in university parking lots on campus.
Further out from the center of campus, city streets that have been used for parking on for free now require a small red and white permit that hangs from the rear-view mirror of a vehicle. The university permits, issued by the City of Rexburg, cost $15 per semester or $35 per year.
Reactions to these changes have been varied.

However, Scroll observed on Thursday, Sept. 10 that less than 25 percent of the 49 vehicles parked between the Snow building and the corner of Second S. and First E. near the Kirkham, were parked correctly.
Captain Lewis of the Rexburg City Police Department said that while police will eventually issue tickets for improperly parking, “We’re trying to give them time to adjust.”
Long time residents of Rexburg have praised the new residential permits (green tags that hang from the rear-view mirror). Bernie Jensen has lived on College Avenue, which runs from in front of the Spori building to Main Street for 41 years.
“I’m all for it,” said Jensen of the new regulation. “Before it’s been a real problem.” He mentioned how difficult it was for family to visit when the street in front of his home had no place for them to park.

Student Loses Mother in Haiti Student Loses Mother in Haiti
As death continues rise in Haiti one BYU Idaho student explains that losing her mother has altered her life dramatically. Lets take a look at how she is coping, and what students around campus are doing to help.
Farah Jn Baptiste with the help of her close friends remains hopeful as she continues school just one week after losing her mother.
“They say that I am strong, and I don’t know maybe I am. But I am just doing things that I don’t even think that I could. Cause I lost my mom anyway. But I know that I still have to go to class,” said Baptiste.
Farah continues to focus on school because it was her mothers wish that she gain an education.
“Sometimes I am kind of scared of myself. It’s just not me. I got to class and I do my test and I take notes but it’s not me. I think it’s just muscles memory,” said Baptiste.
Farah showed many family photos as she explained how she is coping.
Farah’s ward has been fasting, praying, and providing meals regularly. Tracy Robbins in particular identified with Farah.
“I couldn’t take it away. I realized that this scripture just came to me was you know, mourn with those that mourn and comfort those that stand in need of comfort’. That my responsibility was to mourn with her and comfort her,” said Robbins.
In Response Farah stated, “The fact that they believe in me makes me want to do more. Makes me want to keep on trying. Keep on going forward that it happened it had my Heavenly Father knows my needs.”
Haiti Fundraiser Haiti Fundraiser
On Jan. 12, 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti, causing the loss of over 150,000 lives, according to a preliminary assessment from Haiti's government on Jan 23. This unfortunate occurrence has touched the whole world at large and sparked concern amongst people all over the world, including several students at BYU-Idaho.
Two students — Gina Dorson, a Haitian-American recent convert and sophomore from Florida; and Adam Bouka, a freshman of African descent from Montreal, Canada — teamed up to organize a fundraiser and care kit project to aid the survivors of the disaster-stricken people of Haiti.
On Friday, Jan. 29th, 2010, the group will hold a fundraising dance at the Old Cajun Bob's. The entry cost is $6 and every dollar will be donated toward the support of the survivors in Haiti.
“I've lost five cousins from this earthquake and some are still missing,” Dorson said. “My family is having a hard time coping with our loss, but thank goodness I have a strong testimony of the Plan of Salvation. I've been a member [of the Church] for two years now. When Elders go on a mission and they return and they say it’s the best two years of their lives. I can truly say it’s been the best two years of my life too.
Dorson’s background has contributed to her desire to serve.
“I am the youngest of three children,” she said. “I come from a Catholic background. My parents are still Catholic till today. I have faith that one day they will accept the gospel in their lives. While in college I plan to volunteer in my community. I will not give up. I will put a 100% effort into my work. What makes me stand above the rest is the desire and heart that I have allowed myself to overcome any obstacles and strive for the best. The desire and heart to work well with others, and most importantly the desire and heart to work hard.”
Bouka attributes his desire to serve to his heritage.
Adam Bouka said, “I was really devastated when I learned about the tragedy that occurred in Haiti. I am not Haitian, but I want [my Haitian friends] to know that as Christians and members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we care for our brothers. I know that the Church has already helped a lot. I have learned that there are times to pray and worship, but there are times when we need to get moving and help and give to people that are in need.”
Bouka has teamed up with several organizations and institutions to organize a fundraising dance party for this cause.
“How we got to mobilize that many people in such a short time, I don’t really know. I really think that the Lord prepared the way.”
Bouka met a promoter of events in Rexburg, who assure that everything necessary for the fundraiser was donated: the facilties, the DJ, the lighting and sound equipment and the flyers..The promoter also contacted the American Red Cross, and other non-profit associations.
The volunteers are expecting over a thousand people,” Bouka said. “With a goal of at least $6000 to help the people of Haiti, these student volunteers are genuinely putting their shoulders to the wheel of righteousness and humanitarian service.”
Others expressed their enthusiasm for the project.
Jeff Beck, a freshman from Oregon, said, “It is the attitude that matters. Even though it is something small, we are taking care of the children of God in Haiti who need help. But we just feel good that we will be able to contribute a little bit to help our brothers.”
He also cited the Relief Society slogan, “Charity Never Faileth.”
“I really think that we need to care for each other,” Beck said. “I don't want to be only someone that says they aspire to become a disciple of Christ, but someone that shows it by his actions. This is one of the things I have learned since I have been at BYU-I. This is only my third week here in Rexburg, but I love it because there is a special spirit here.”
All through this week, flyers will be handed out to various apartments around campus to create enough awareness of this project.

Madison Fire Department is participating in the Uniforms, Kids and Lunch program, hoping to raise fire safety awareness among children.
Uniforms, Kids and Lunch gives firefighters the opportunity to eat lunch with their children or other children at schools in the community.
“I think it’s the power of influence. We want to get these guys out in the community,” said Corey Child, Madison’s Chief of Emergency Services.
At least once a week members go out to the schools their children attend or go as a group to visit a particular school.
“I went to my son’s school. It wasn’t just fun for us, but everyone. He was on cloud nine,” said firefighter Ellis Johnston.
The program isn’t just about fun though; the fire department has other goals in mind.
“In the past we’ve kind of kept to ourselves, haven’t really gone into the community. But it’s important for them to see we’re helping people not just in medical trouble or in burning buildings. We want them to be familiar with us,” said Mikel Walker, assistant chief of emergency services.
Usually when the kids see the firefighters they have lots of questions. Johnston said they included some safety questions and curiosities about the job.
“They want to know if it’s scary running into a burning building. They want to know if the hose is heavy. They are really just little chatterboxes,” Johnston said.
Walker said one of the primary benefits is what the kids get from the experience.
“We want to give them a positive role model. Our station has really good morals and we want to give them someone they can look up to with high morals and values,” he said.
Walker said the program has a good chance of continuing. It started at the beginning of the month and was supposed to end in a couple of days, but he’s not sure that will happen.
“We want to continue the program as long as we can get guys out there,” Walker said.
Walker also talked about the overwhelming positive experience he’s had with Uniforms, Kids and Lunch.
“I love kids. When we go into schools they all want to sit at our table, they want to high-five us and give us knuckles. It’s one of the rewarding parts of our job,” he said.
Uniforms, Kids and Lunch is changing the way kids think. Johnston said he could see it in his son.
“First thing when he woke up he said, ‘OK Dad, see you at lunch!’ That was at six in the morning; it was the first thing on his mind.”
Johnston thinks the change is because of the confidence the program brings.
“It really builds their confidence when we come; it shows them we care and that we’re there for them. That is the best part for me, seeing the looks on their faces.”
BYU-Idaho or BYU-Provo in Utah BYU-Idaho or BYU-Provo in Utah?
As a disclaimer, I'm writing as a BYU-Provo student. I honestly never considered going to BYU-Idaho even though many of my friends did. Why? Because BYU-Idaho has yet to establish a reputable four-year university. After getting a degree from BYU, I recognize that degrees mean very little unless the degree is Ivy League, but there's definitely a difference in the quality of education that accompanies the degree, depending on the institution. I cannot speak for BYU-Idaho, its education, or its professors, but I can say that BYU-Provo provides a better education for the price than BYU-Idaho does. You could try proving the opposite, but the only reasoning that would hold any water would be class size differential, which isn't even that great.
Location was the other major factor for me. Idaho is nice. I used to live there. However, given the fact that I knew I wanted to attend a church school, I wanted to be more centrally located to opportunity, which I find more of in Utah Valley than in Idaho. Don't believe me? Just look at any Utah directory and you'll see that there are many businesses, large and small, providing opportunities for work, learning, and growth to BYU students - many more here than in Idaho. People who go to BYU-Idaho obviously have reasons for doing so, but for my life goals and ambitions, I think I chose well.

Is this what BYU-I needs?
I first off would like to answer my own question and say that I am open to all comments on this subject. I have been talking to a lot of people about this very same subject for a number of years now and I believe that BYU-I needs to have it's own social network that the students are required to be apart of.
We are half way there with having I-Learn. I-Learn has WIKI and Blog options that the teachers can utilize to get comments about certain topics from the students and the can hold discussion boards. I know, I know, I-Learn still has a lot of kinks that they need to work out and also is the cause of a lot of stress for the students on campus especially when it comes to taking tests, quizes and submitting homework.
I feel that if we were able to create a social network on campus this would open up so many more oportunities for students to stay connected with their classmates and be able to learn from eachother. This would also require the staff to be members of the nework so they would be more available to help out their students. The teachers would probably think that this is a terrible idea because they wouldn't want to be checking their email and get a bunch of instant messages from their students who are struggling but what would the difference be than them receiving messages by instant messages rather than emails.
I know I-Learn actually has this option already that many people (ok, the majority of the campus) don't know about. There is a way for the teacher to have a status option so when they are at their desk logged into their BYU-I account the students can see that and they can send instant messages to their teacher. So why not incorporate this and let teach the teachers how to stay up-to-date with today's intercommunications technology. I think we are about 75% of the way there to creating a social nework that actually is effective for a college student. There are just a few minor tweeks that need to be done and we would be able to be a more successfull campus. I would really like to know what everyone else has to say about this and get as many opinions on this matter. Who knows this could turn out to be a proposal that would initiate one of the biggest innovations that happen on this campus.

Have you ever contemptuously thought to yourself that those playing sports video games should go play a “real” sport?
“To most people it’s a video game, to me it’s a dream come true,” said Hans Smith, a junior studying communication, of the upcoming release of MLB:10 The Show, which will feature his image as a player in the game.
Smith’s dream is to become a radio baseball commentator. Smith also has cerebral palsy, which confines him to a wheelchair and affects his hands and arms, making physical participation in sporting activities all but impossible.
“Your disability is what you have, not who you are,” Smith said. “Your mind determines your reality. Now I can be me. Now I can be a baseball player.”
Smith has loved baseball since early childhood and remembers when his two older brothers explained the games to him as they would listen together on the radio. “We were one of five families [in the country] who didn’t have cable TV,” Smith said.
Later, when his parents bought him a Sega Genesis so he could play baseball video games, Smith surprised his family by beating his two brothers. Owing to his physical disability, Smith’s parents had doubted his ability to use the video game controller. “I absolutely killed ‘em,” Smith said. This started Smith’s career of “virtual baseball.”
Not all baseball games, however, are alike to Smith. In the fall of 2007, when Smith saw a commercial for MLB:08 The Show, he knew it was better than what he had been playing.
“This game was unbelievable,” Smith said. Along with excellent graphics and a first-person play mode, “you had to read coaches’ signs … [and know] when to be in position for a double feature.”
The new game more fully recreated the feeling of being an actual baseball player. Smith was sold, and he got rid of his Xbox in order to be able to purchase and play the new game on the PlayStation 3. Little did he know that his decision to buy this game would lead to him being a “part of the action” in more ways than he expected.
“I decided to play a whole 162-game series,” Smith said. “About the middle of the season I realized I would be extremely ungrateful if I didn’t thank [the makers of the game].”
“I wanted to write Sony … to tell them how much I appreciated their game,” Smith said. “[When I wrote to them] I said you have given me an opportunity to do something that I would do in real life, but I can’t because of something that is out of my control.”
The senior director of the MLB game franchise for Sony called Smith in response to his letter. He told Smith how grateful they were for Smith’s expression of gratitude. “[He said] ‘we would like to make your dream of being a baseball player even more a reality,’” Smith said.
This then followed with a trip to the studio in San Diego, where Smith had his head scanned with a 360 degree camera and his voice recorded.
Sony even agreed that his player, which bears his name, will continue in the game every year until the franchise ends.
This means that how Smith performs in his virtual MLB season this year will affect the statistics of Hans Smith the baseball player in next year’s game, just as with real Major League players. “This is like my rookie year,” Smith said.
Even as he begins his baseball career, Smith tries to avoid placing too much emphasis on himself. “I think what [this article] does more than [telling] my glamorous story is showing the power of gratitude,” Smith said. “It’s the power of saying thanks.”
Smith is also thankful to God for blessings he has received. “Several times I have actually prayed to Heavenly Father and told Him how thankful I am that I can play baseball,” Smith said.
When he begins his season sometime after the game is released on March 2, Smith says he plans on entering the draft. His player is a catcher. He will then play the season, never compromising the reality of the experience or his 13 credit homework load by playing more than one game per day.
At least one pre-season game will give friends and potential fans the opportunity to see their player up close and in person. The Reading Center, where Smith works part time, plans to have a party for him when the game comes out, said Department Faculty Julie Engstrom.
There will be a big-screen baseball field to boot, and Smith is looking forward to some spectators. “One thing I can’t simulate in a baseball game,” Smith said, “is the crowd.”

A pick-up line is used as a potential icebreaker or a conversation starter and can range from the simple “hi” to the longer phrases like, “If you were Spock’s phaser, you would be set to stun.”
How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice. Breaking the ice with a pick-up line seems like a good way to start a conversation because it usually breaks the tension by getting the other person to laugh. But what do BYU-Idaho students think about pick-up lines?
“I can tell you I don’t think they work. I think they are funny though,” said Jenny Bourne, a freshman studying communication. Jenny said that one of her friends had an experience in which a boy said, “Hey, you look like someone I know.” Her friend found out later that she didn’t look like anyone he knew; he just wanted an excuse to begin a conversation.
Pick-up lines have evolved from generic lines that can be used on anyone, like, “If I could rearrange the alphabet I would put U and I together,” to more specialized pick-up lines that will only make sense to the people who are savvy on certain subjects.
These are a few examples of specialized pick-up lines; For a Harry Potter fan, you might try, “I know we're not in Professor Flitwick's class, but you still are charming;” or for the Twilight fanatic, “You look imprintable…I mean uhh…impeccable in that outfit.” The physics major might respond to, “Can I have your significant digits?” While the math major would prefer, “Hey baby, what's your sine?” For the science fiction lovers try something like, “Tell me of this thing you humans call (pause) love,” In a religion class, try, “Is your name Virtue? Because you garnish my thoughts unceasingly,” these and tons more.
Better save this one for the summer time: “Man it’s hot outside, but you just made it 10 degrees hotter.” Cameron Bassett, a sophomore studying exercise physiology, said yes, he has used a pick-up line before, and he had the girl’s number when he came away from the conversation. Basset said, “It’s more fun, just a joke to break the ice.”
“Did it hurt (Pause) when you fell from heaven?”
Ben Anderson, a junior studying economics, said, “I usually just go for compliments.” Anderson gave an example of a compliment he would use: “Has anyone told you that you have the most dazzling eyes?”
Pick-up lines can be fun icebreakers and great for jokes amongst friends. General pick-up lines can be used on anyone but be sure to do the research before using a more specialized pick-up line. Don’t feel pressure to deliver pick-up lines in a particular way they are meant to be light hearted and fun anyway.

Students Communicate in Foreig Students Communicate in Foreign Tongues
Students attending Brigham Young University – Idaho come from across the country and across the world, each student bringing their own ‘slang’ to share with the campus. Here are some common words and phrases that can be heard around BYU-I Do:
IF: Idaho Falls. The place to go if you need to shop, eat or be entertained. Idaho Falls is approximately 30 minutes away from Brigham Young University-Idaho and considered to be the closest civilization to campus. Most common use is “Let’s go to IF for dinner tonight.”
DTR: define the relationship. This process usually involves a long talk and some awkward moments. Will they become official, or should the relationship come to a halt? An example of this acronym would be: “We need to DTR.” Or, "They had a DTR last night."
Hecka: a substitute word for “‘really’” or “‘extremely.’” Most commonly used by Californians. Chandler Burrows, a freshman majoring in general studies, started using hecka so she wouldn’t get in trouble at school. “Everyone says it, especially in northern California. Hecka sounds more proper.” Makelle Alldrege, a freshman studying health science said: “I will never stop saying hecka. I will say hecka in heaven.” An example of the word hecka in a sentence would be: “I’m hecka nervous right now.”
Devo: abbreviation for devotional. An event that takes place each Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hart auditorium. An example of this word in a sentence would be: “Are you going to devo today?”
Dear John: the process of sending a letter to a missionary out in the field informing that you no longer wish to be with them. It can also refer to the act of being broken up by letter while on your mission. For example, “I got dear-johned.”
FOF: Friends on Facebook. “FOF is the new BFF,” said Emerson Parsons, a sophomore studying sociology. “It just signifies the fact that people’s Facebook relationships matter more than their physical real-life relationships. I think it’s ridiculous that some people don’t think anything is official until it is Facebook official.” An example of this word in a sentence is “Are we FOF yet?”
Stalker-net: refers to the BYU–I student directory. This online directory supplies you with everything you could want to know about someone and more: name, email, home address and even a photo.
