Take the right track, harvest talents

Develop talents. People hear this counsel regularly from leaders, friends, and others. Talents come in many forms. They can range from the ability to play an instrument to the ability to play a sport well.
“I think there’s a broader definition than we normally think of for talents,” said Jillisa Cranmer, a faculty member in the Teacher Education Department. “When we think of talents, I think we immediately think of athletic ability, or music performance or creative art. I feel like gifts and talents span all the senses and take many forms.”
The ability to create and develop a talent varies depending on the person and the talent involved.
“Be patient with yourself,” Cranmer said. “Developing talents does not happen overnight. It takes experiences – lots of them. You need to create opportunities and experiences where you can practice your talent.”
The leaders of the Church encourage members to develop their talents.
James E. Faust, a former member of the First Presidency, gave a talk in the priesthood session of General Conference in October 2002 entitled “I Believe I Can, I Knew I Could.” In this talk, he applied the children’s story The Little Engine That Could to talents.
In the story, the other trains were too busy or unwilling to take a large load over the mountain. The “Little Engine That Could” did not know if she could pull the load, but she tried anyway, all the while saying, “I think I can.”
“Like the ‘Little Engine That Could,’ we need to be on the right track and develop our talents,” Faust said. “I hope we can all be like the ‘Little Engine That Could.’ It wasn’t very big, had only been used for switching cars and had never been over a mountain, but it was willing. … Each of us must climb mountains that we have never climbed before.”
Miguel Flores, a freshman studying history education, has many talents, which he uses to help others. Throughout his life, he has taken different steps to develop his talents.
“Everyone has talents, but if you do not have the patience to develop them, you will never know what they could become,” Flores said.
Talents come in many shapes and sizes. Talents can be used at work, school, home and church.

Get résumé in shape: prepare now for internships, employment

Internships are now required for many college degrees. Employers and businesses want college graduates with experience, but getting an internship is not always easy. Expectations and requirements tend to be high; however, through preparation and work, students can get internships.
“Students need to develop the skill of researching their audience so they can understand what this employer’s specific needs are. Companies hire people who can best meet their needs. How can you show an employer you can meet their needs if you do not know [what] they are?” said Barbara Thompson, a professional preparation coordinator in the Internship and Career Services Office.
While internships vary from major to major, most internships require similar foundational skills and preparation. Some skills students should learn in preparation for an internship are good writing and networking. These two skills open doors of opportunity for internships and careers.
“Networking is crucial because a large number of jobs today are filled through networking before they are even posted. Students also need to have excellent résumé writing, cover letter writing and interviewing skills,” Thompson said.
Alayne Smith, a sophomore studying elementary education, has already begun preparing for her internship. Smith is currently doing early field experience and working on skills tailored to her chosen field.
“I think internships are a really good idea because they give you experience. Internships make you think about the reality of the job and if you are fit for it,” Smith said.
BYU-Idaho’s Internship and Career Services department help students prepare for future internships and careers. On www.byui.edu/careerservices/, these departments provide many tools and services for students. According to the site, the goal of Career Services is “to assist students and alumni in marketing themselves successfully to potential employers.”
Career Services provides free résumé reviews, cover letter reviews and practice interviews throughout the year. Students can sign up for these mentoring appointments using their my.byui.edu account or Career Navigator.
These free services help students improve their marketability. As part of the practice interviews, students are given the opportunity to record a copy of their interview.
This allows students to see how they present themselves to the interviewer. A résumé is a tool students can use to impress an employer. In addition to providing résumé reviews, Career Services held a Résumé Café on March 1 and 2. This event focused on helping students prepare their résumés for the Career Fair. Résumé Café is also held during other semesters.
“Make it a top priority to learn how to write a good résumé now. Many students underestimate the importance of a powerful résumé and the time and effort it requires. If that employer has no idea who you are and what skills you have, your résumé is typically your only chance you have to show them. You can’t cram your way to a powerful résumé. You get out of it what you put into it,” Thompson said.
Thompson also said that some ways to make a powerful résumé include organizing the layout, making your name stand out, using action verbs, keeping content concise and making it visually appealing.
“Employers assume that the quality of the materials you provide them is the quality of work you will do for their company and how you will represent yourself to their customers. Make sure that everything you submit to them is top notch, error-free and absolutely professional,” Thompson said.
Attending career workshops and career management seminars are other ways students can prepare for internships. Career Services holds mentoring sessions, workshops and seminars throughout the year. Students should sign up several weeks in advance for a mentoring session.
For more information about internship services and resources, visit the Internship and Career Services Web site or go to Kimball 230.
“Get prepared now. Know your job hunting resources and utilize them. Start networking. Get your résumé in shape,” Thompson said. “The Internship and Career Services Office has many resources to assist students in doing all of these things.”

Learning to save money now will prepare individuals for the uncertainties of the future. No one knows when the next natural disaster will strike. The news cannot report an economic decline before it occurs. The future is full of uncertainties, but college students can prepare today by learning how to budget and to save money."Four of the most important skills we can develop are establishing financial goals, budgeting, controlling debt and saving during times of plenty for times of need,” according to the April 1990 Ensign article “Where’s All Our Money Going?”All four of these skills can help students prepare for the future. Financial goals work hand-in-hand with budgeting to keep individuals debt-free and ready for the trials ahead. One of the four mentioned skills, budgeting, is one way to prepare for the future. No matter what kinds of incomes and expenses, everyone can learn to budget their money effectively.Budgeting can help college students stretch their money out across a semester, a year or more.LeaDawn Grant, a graduate of BYU-Idaho with a degree in construction management, spent the months following her graduation learning how to budget her money. During those first two months, Grant could not find employment and had to learn how to make money last.“Keep track of your spending. The more you are aware of what you spend, the more you will save,” Grant said. “The first thing to do is to have an overall idea of how much you want to spend. That takes a little bit of research. What is a good monthly budget for someone my size or my age or my family size? … Set a goal and research it.”Other parts of budgeting include testing the budget. Determine if any amounts need to be changed. Maybe a person keeps going over or under budget. They should adjust their budget to match their needs and then stick to that budget. Even though Grant found a job, she still continued to budget her money and to look for ways to save money. She listed a few ways that she has found to save money. One way to save money is to use coupons.“There are so many ways that you can save by using coupons, by just being aware,” Grant said. “Be aware of where the coupons are and where you can find them. Be aware that there are coupons and that you can save money.”There are many different places that college students can get coupons. Local stores place cutout coupons next to their products in their store. Scroll and other newspapers contain coupon inserts for local stores. There are also printable coupons online.Emma Johnson, a freshman studying sociology, grew up learning how to use coupons effectively. Johnson learned to watch for and utilize store sales and coupons.“Watch sales and always make sure to print out coupons every week,” Johnson said. Johnson also said to check which stores have the lowest prices and then to go use coupons at those stores. Another way to save money is to take advantage of free samples and online resources.Companies give out free samples all the time. Free samples and coupons are readily accessible online. When asked about where to find coupons, Grant said that couponing blogs are one of the best places to find coupons.Grant uses the following coupon blogs: moneysavingmom.com and crazy-coupon-lady.com. Coupon blogs are collections of coupons for a large variety of stores. The blogs themselves do not have the printable coupons but they contain links to the Web sites where the coupons can be printed.Grant made her own blog with the goal to share her knowledge with others. Grant’s blog, www.thecouponbasics.blogspot.com, features multiple ways to save money.According to Grant’s blog, Grant’s goal “is to be able to help each of you save money by budgeting, using coupons, shopping sales and promotions, cooking from scratch, and more.”From Feb. 16 to Feb. 26, Grant is hosting a Broulim’s gift card giveaway on her blog.Readers of Grant’s blog can enter the giveaway up to four times. Two $20 gift cards will be given away. For more information, visit Grant’s blog. One myth of couponing is that coupons hurt the store.“It doesn’t hurt the store,” Grant said. “Lots of people feel like they are stealing or that they are hurting the stores if they use a coupon. But the stores make money off of it. It is just like money to them. They send it to the manufactures and get that money back. Except for the store coupons which stores know that they are putting that out there. They are not going to lose money off their coupons. … The stores want you to use coupons because they know you will buy more stuff and come to the store more often.”Amanda EutslerScroll Staff

Fire Alarm interrupts Feb. 24 showing of Macbeth

At the 7:30 p.m. showing of Macbeth on February 24, 2010, the Snow building fire alarm went off unexpectedly. The fire alarm sounded during Act 4, Scene 2, approximately thirty minutes before the completion of the play. “Something always happens with this play. There is so much superstition related to putting on a production of Macbeth,” said Libby Nelson, a sophomore studying English Education. As mentioned in the February 23, 2010 edition of the Scroll, the common belief is that there is a curse on the play. Actors throughout the world take extra precautions when rehearsing and performing Macbeth. In that Scroll edition, Roger Merrill, BYU-Idaho director of the play Macbeth said that they were not worried about the curse because “our God is more powerful than a Scottish ghost.”Though there is a curse related to the play of Macbeth, there is no evidence that the curse caused the fire alarm to go off. While the fire alarm did interrupt the play, no accidents or suspicious things occurred. The fire alarm went off due to the large amounts of fog generated by the fog machine used during specific scenes in the play.Despite the distracting alarm, the actors stayed in character. When the alarm continued to sound, the play was put on hold and everyone was asked to exit the building until the situation was addressed. “I was really impressed with the actors and how they kept character,” Liz Loynd, a freshman (undecided). The audience members and others stayed outside the Snow building for approximately five to ten minutes. “I wish I had been able to see the play without the fire alarm,” said Cassidy Hadden, a freshman studying accounting. When everyone was allowed to re-enter the building, the audience were told that the incident was unexpected and that if the fire alarm went off again, they could remain in their seats. The audience would be informed if there was a real fire. “The interruption is a little weird,” said Lizz Sorensen, a junior studying English creative writing. “I love the play.” Because the fire alarms interrupted the play, the actors re-enacted the disrupted scene. The audience watched again as the Macduffs’ castle was stormed and the Macduff family were slaughtered. The conclusion of the play was met with a standing ovation.“It was pretty insane. A lot of really good acting. I liked it a lot. It’s epic,” said Katie Goddard, a sophomore studying English education.Other audience members also praised Macbeth.“[The] set and blocking was amazing. This is by far the best show I’ve seen here,” said Valerie Michnick, a sophomore (undecided).Amanda EutslerScroll Staff

Journaling habits revamped with technology

Before computers, printers and modern innovations, the written word was recorded on handcrafted materials. Innovations and technologies allowed the journal to expand its horizons.Traditionally, journals were handwritten accounts kept on paper or in books. Journals allowed individuals to record thoughts, feelings and events.Individuals viewed journals as records for their posterity.“Every person should keep a journal and every person can keep a journal,” said President Spencer W. Kimball in a 1979 general conference address. “It should be an enlightening one and should bring great blessings and happiness to the families. If there is anyone here who isn’t doing so, will you repent today and change — change your life?”President Kimball gave this advice over 30 years ago, and it is still applicable today. However, technology changed the journal arena.Handwritten journals are not the only form of journals. Now, journals encompass a wider variety of mediums such as scrapbooks, blogs and Facebook.Journals include anything from writing to videos. More options are available with advances in technology. People who keep journals have the opportunity to record their thoughts on the Internet.“I think, in blogs, we are more conscious of audience,” said Josh Allen, English Department faculty. “But with a blog we have a more real vision of who our audience is. We are able, in a way, to write for that audience.”Blogs and other electronic methods of communication allow journals to branch out into newer venues untraveled by previous generations.“It is kind of like a scrapbook/journal combo,” said Morgan Mathis, a freshman studying general education. “You can add pictures and videos and a bunch of links to your favorite sites. People get to learn from you and about you. It keeps everyone in touch with each other.”Another advantage of blogs as personal journals is dissemination. In other words, your words and works can be spread abroad and shared with the world.Convenience adds to the appeal of electronic journals. However, there are disadvantages to blogs as well.“Since everyone can read it, you can’t write everything down,” Mathis said. “There are some things that you don’t want everyone to know, like who your crush is.”Many online blogging companies have taken this factor into account. Blogs now offer privacy settings that only allow individuals you invite to view your blog. Facebook has similar measures in place.Although there is no real way to know what the future of journals will be, the tradition of keeping a journal can continue. New technologies will arise and new methods of communication will come into being, but the creation of personal journals, personal accounts of people’s lives, will persist.

Libby Nelson began her dance career at age nine. Originally the idea to take a dance class came from her mother, but Nelson independently developed a life-altering joy for dance. During her childhood, she learned clogging, ballroom and Irish step. She went on to master other dance genres in later years.Armed with the desire to make dance a permanent part of her life, Nelson came to BYU–Idaho as a dance major. Nelson auditioned for and was accepted to the BYU–Idaho Collegiate World Dance Team."If you have any interest in dance, BYU–Idaho is such a wonderful start,” Nelson said. After three semesters on the team, Nelson reflected on the opportunities and experiences she gained by being a member of Collegiate. Expanding dance experience, establishing relationships with fellow dancers and teaching dance workshops are only a few ways in which Nelson grew while on the team. “I am on the World Team, which gives me the opportunity to explore dance genres outside my country. It’s incredible. . . .

Time is something many people wish they had more of. Between the demands of school, work, socializing and church, time can be a rare commodity, but it does not need to be.By managing time effectively, individuals will find they have more time than they previously believed."Because of increased life expectancies and modern timesaving devices, most of us have far more discretionary time than our predecessors. We are accountable for how we use that time,” said Elder Dallin H. Oaks, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in his talk “Focus and Priorities.”By planning the day in order of highest priorities to lowest priorities, students can focus on completing essential tasks first, leaving non-essential tasks for last.“I think students have more time than they think they do,” said DJ Teichert, Academic Learning faculty. “You consider we have 168 hours a week, each of us. And if you subtract the 15 hours spent in classes, and we should study two hours at least for every hour in class. So if you are 15 hours in class that means you are 30 hours studying outside of class. You subtract 45 hours from 168, there should be time left over.”BYU-Idaho recognizes the need to teach students time-management skills and provides multiple services to meet this need. The Life Skills workshops are one way students can learn how to manage time. The workshops occur regularly throughout the semester and last only a couple of hours. In the workshops, students will learn how to plan out their schedule to accomplish their goals while staying flexible. To sign up for a Life Skills workshop, go to www.byui.edu/lifeskills.Another opportunity to develop time-management skills is the Study Skills Center. This center provides six three and a half-week modules, one of which is on time management. The module counts for 0.5 credits and teaches students how to manage time effectively and how to overcome procrastination. For more information go to www.byui.edu/studyskillscenter or visit the Study Skills Center on the second floor of the David O. McKay Library.“Make sure to give yourself free time. Do what you say you are going to do and then you won’t feel guilty during your free time. The thing that you dread the most, do first. That way you won’t dread it while you are doing other things,” said Shelley Cox, a senior studying exercise science. One thing to remember while organizing your time is that sleep is essential for good health. According to www.sleepfoundation.org, “Sleep is vital to our health and well-being . . . Sleep regulates mood and is related to learning and memory function. Not only will getting enough sleep help you learn a new skill, stay on task or be productive, it may also be a critical factor in your health, weight and energy level.”The recommended amount of sleep each night is seven to eight hours, but this varies depending on the body’s individual needs.“I think that one of the biggest problems that students have on campus is they are not getting adequate rest,” Teichert said. “It affects [everything] because they don’t get enough sleep. They need to have a consistent time that they go to sleep each night and be getting seven to nine hours.”
