Students rate apartments on web site

Spring semester is weeks away. Housing complexes are beginning to fill up and costs are increasing. College students can find it difficult trying to decide where to commit the next couple months of eating, sleeping and studying. Raterexburghousing.com is a website created to helping the decision-making process. Raterexburghousing.com was founded in winter 2008 by two BYU-Idaho students, Matt Stephens and Eli Stevens, who “felt that student housing in Rexburg was too confusing.” Prior to Rate Rexburg Housing’s creation, the only source for information was the school’s Web site. That didn’t provide all the information that these two students were looking for.Rate Rexburg Housing allows current BYU-I students to register using their school email address. Once registered, students can rate and comment on approved apartment complexes in Rexburg. There are six different ratings a student can look at: quality, location, parking, ward, management and price. Students do not have to register to view what others have said about the approved apartments and houses in Rexburg. Just by visiting the Web site, students can compare housing and see a 360-degree virtual tour of complexes. Some apartment complexes allow students to purchase their housing contract through raterexburghousing.com. Since its 2008 premiere, Rate Rexburg Housing has become extremely popular.“We constantly get emails from students telling us how much they like the site and what they'd like to see from it in the future. We just want to be whatever it is that the students want with regards to housing,” said Stephens, a recent BYU-I graduate, “Rate Rexburg Housing embraces the idea that if there is something of value in the site, then the popularity and utility of the site will grow because people will care about it. A word from a friend is worth a thousand from an ad.”Rate Rexburg Housing is currently expanding their Web site and working to make it an applicable resource to married students as well.“We are currently gathering surveys for married housing by going door-to-door, collecting ratings from actual tenants living at those apartments,” Stephens said. The site will also be adding a bulletin board feature. These new additions are currently being worked on and should be launched sometime in late June or early July. RateProvoHousing.com is also under construction and will be launching this summer. Rate Rexburg Housing is currently looking for semester long interns to help maintain the site and participate in future marketing campaigns. Anyone interested can email raterexburghousing@gmail.com for more information.

Make your University Apartment a Home

While the definition of a home is different to everyone, little things can be done to make a college apartment more welcoming. Not every apartment is going to be dressed to the nines, but some color, Clorox and carnations can put an apartment in business.
This month’s Ensign featured an article titled “That They May Grow Up In Thee.” The article talked about creating “a home that reflects our own tastes, lifestyle, and personality.” It mentions a young woman who didn’t want to wait until she was married to buy “real” dishes. She would reward herself with a dish each time she reached an important goal. The young woman in the article was then able to invite guests over and feel pleased about her presentation when serving them. While it may not be practical to go out and buy a nice set of dishes as a college student, having a cheap matching set can make a college apartment feel more like a home.
Putting a picture on the wall can bring life into a room. Be tasteful in decorations. Not everyone appreciates giant posters of Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner on the wall. A simple quote wall complemented with pictures of the temple or the Savior could be the perfect addition to any apartment. Kaylee Merrill, a junior majoring in general studies, recommends taking pieces of fabric and cutting out different shapes. A fabric stiffener can then be used to put the pieces of fabric on the walls. Merrill thinks color makes the difference over a plain white wall. Freshman Kelsi Wheeler, a pre-nursing major, thinks Christmas lights are the perfect way to liven up a room.
“At night it looks like you are under the stars,” Wheeler said.
Whether artificial or real, having a plant can bring life into a room. Plants have the ability to make a person feel better when they are depressed.
“My mom always had plants in her house,” Merrill said. “It makes you look more settled in. Plants remind me of home.”
Walking into a clean apartment provides a more welcoming environment for guests. Mae Suppes, a junior studying communication, likes walking into an apartment that “smells good and is clean.” Scrubbing the counters daily and having an empty sink isn’t necessary. Making sure things are picked up can make an apartment look more presentable. Every person in each apartment comes from a different household and was raised to handle tidiness a different way. While it may not bother one person if the sink is full of dishes when it’s time for bed, another person may have been raised to never sleep with a dirty kitchen. Having a clean home makes things more comfortable for the people who live there and the people who come to visit.

Fire Alarm in the Snow Building

Students and faculty fled from the Snow building Wednesday afternoon when a fire alarm went off at approximately 4:05 pm. The fire alarm was set off by smoke machines being used inside the Snow Black Box Theatre. No damage was done to the Snow building and no injuries occurred.
Ray Versluys, the theatre technical director, said the fire alarm was triggered by too much smoke from theatrical haze. Versluys explained that theatrical haze is similar to smoke and the fire alarms sense smoke very easily.
The theatrical haze came from fog machines being tested for next week’s production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Macbeth opens February 17 and runs through February 27.
“We have to take precautions to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Versluys said. “Fire alarms are very sensitive. If it could pick up that much smoke, imagine what it could do during an actual fire.”
The students and faculty were unable to enter the building until the haze left and the building was inspected by safety personnel.
Students were in various classes when the fire alarm went off. Justin Baker, a freshman studying business management, said he was headed to the Snow building to practice for Open Mic night when he was asked to leave. Freshman Brian Hathaway, Recreational Management major, was participating in men’s choir when he had to leave the building.

Talent Activities gets an '80s Makeover

Talent activities will be putting on 10 different shows this semester. Their lineup of shows might not be what students are looking for. Sit Down for Stand Up and Nashville Nights will not be featured this semester. Krisann Leavitt, a Talent Activities director, said that Talent Activities is “really wanting to expand and reach out to more people. We are trying to give more opportunities for students to get involved and give students more opportunities to learn more talents.” So why aren’t Nashville Nights and Sit Down for Stand Up making an appearance this semester? “It’s possible that future directors might want to bring shows back. We are bringing A’Cappella Jam back this semester. In the future they might want to bring back Nashville Nights. We just wanted to try something new. Learn from expanding and trying new things. What people like and what works. The reason why we chose to not do certain shows, it was losing interest especially for people to audition,” Leavitt said. New this semester are A’Cappella Jam and We’ve Got the 80’s. A’Cappella Jam is an old show that is being brought back. Everything from barbershop to beat box will be seen during this show. A’Cappella Jam will take place in the Crossroads to help create new opportunities and draw more people to the show. A brand new show coming this semester is We’ve got the 80’s. Talent Activities would like people to perform 80’s dance routines and 80’s-themed bands to perform. Basically anything 80’s is welcomed at this event . The audience is encouraged to come in their best 80’s attire. “We thought it would be really fun and a new interest or show to provide to the student environment,” Leavitt said. Talent Activities will feature some new workshops this semester. Workshops occur weekly and allow students to share their skills with each other. iPod Idol is coming soon. It will be similar to karaoke, only featuring iPods. How does a director feel about the changes that are taking place? “Let’s give talent a facelift and try new things and see how people react to that. We just want to create something new and fun for people to enjoy.” Talent activities is working to evolve, expand and change.

Students Communicate in Foreign Tongues

Students attending Brigham Young University – Idaho come from across the country and across the world, each student bringing their own ‘slang’ to share with the campus. Here are some common words and phrases that can be heard around BYU-I Do:

IF: Idaho Falls. The place to go if you need to shop, eat or be entertained. Idaho Falls is approximately 30 minutes away from Brigham Young University-Idaho and considered to be the closest civilization to campus. Most common use is “Let’s go to IF for dinner tonight.”

DTR: define the relationship. This process usually involves a long talk and some awkward moments. Will they become official, or should the relationship come to a halt? An example of this acronym would be: “We need to DTR.” Or, "They had a DTR last night."

Hecka: a substitute word for “‘really’” or “‘extremely.’” Most commonly used by Californians. Chandler Burrows, a freshman majoring in general studies, started using hecka so she wouldn’t get in trouble at school. “Everyone says it, especially in northern California. Hecka sounds more proper.” Makelle Alldrege, a freshman studying health science said: “I will never stop saying hecka. I will say hecka in heaven.” An example of the word hecka in a sentence would be: “I’m hecka nervous right now.”

Devo: abbreviation for devotional. An event that takes place each Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hart auditorium. An example of this word in a sentence would be: “Are you going to devo today?”

Dear John: the process of sending a letter to a missionary out in the field informing that you no longer wish to be with them. It can also refer to the act of being broken up by letter while on your mission. For example, “I got dear-johned.”

FOF: Friends on Facebook. “FOF is the new BFF,” said Emerson Parsons, a sophomore studying sociology. “It just signifies the fact that people’s Facebook relationships matter more than their physical real-life relationships. I think it’s ridiculous that some people don’t think anything is official until it is Facebook official.” An example of this word in a sentence is “Are we FOF yet?”

Stalker-net: refers to the BYU–I student directory. This online directory supplies you with everything you could want to know about someone and more: name, email, home address and even a photo. To access the stalker-net, go to www.byui.edu, click on directories, then click on students and then stalk away. An example of this term in a sentence would be: “I looked you up on stalker-net.”

I think it’s ridiculous that some people don’t think anything is official until it is Facebook official.” An example of this word in a sentence is “Are we FOF yet?”

Professors Speak Out About Rating Website

Let’s pretend that it is time to register for spring classes. You log on to register and realize that the Math 108 class you want to take is full. There are still some openings at different times, but you aren’t so sure about the professor. You have never heard the name before, and neither have your roommates or FHE group. Where do you turn? Ratemyprofessors.com is an opinion site generated by students. It was founded in 1999 and now offers ratings for over 6,000 professors at colleges and universities across the globe. Rate my Professors even has an iPhone application. Rate my Professors allows students to rate their instructor on a five-point scale, five being the best. Students can rate the professors on easiness, helpfulness, clarity and rater interest. Students are allowed to leave comments expressing how they felt the class ran, what they gained from taking the class or whether they would recommend the class to future students. But what exactly are students using this website for?Kortney Yde, a sophomore studying social studies education, uses Rate my Professors ”to see if people actually like the teacher.” But ratemyprofessors.com is not her favorite resource; “I would rather get a firsthand account. The Internet is not always reliable” Yde said.Misty Engh, a sophomore studying health science believes that Rate my Professors is “worthwhile.” She used Rate my Professors to decide what religion class to take. Due to poor reviews on one teacher, she decided to go with another teacher. Greg Palmer, a Religion professor at Brigham Young University–Idaho encourages students with problems to go to the teacher. He said the faculty on this campus usually are open and allow good communication to take place. Brother Palmer also pointed out that “students are always talking — we know that — One disgruntled person can cause skewed views.” “It’s just a website,” says Blaine Robertson, computer information technology professor at BYU–Idaho. “In my opinion, a vast majority of students that use it have a complaint.” Brother Robertson believes that most of the comments posted on Rate my Professors are negative. He thinks the best way to learn about a class is to experience it yourself. “Just like shopping on the internet, never rely on the internet or one review.” “I think once you start to get into your major, sites like Rate my Professors become irrelevant. You already know the teachers and whether you like them or not,“ says Misty Engh. Most professors on campus teach multiple upper and lower level classes. So can truth be found on Rate My Professor? Humor always can, according to Brother Robertson. Registration season comes quickly and it is up to you to do your research. How will you choose?
