Allred's Devotional

Religious Professor Brother phillips Allred speaks in Devotional about how we will be judged in Heaven. Brother Philip Allred is already known on campus for being a good teacher. This semester he teaches Family Foundations, Old Testament, and Book of Mormon. Today, he broke from the norm and taught students about the final judgment in Heaven. I don't think I ever realized that the record of our lives would actually be written in our bodies and our minds. I guess we are what we eat.He brought up a lot of good insights. What would you say was one of the main points that he gave?Naturally when we worry about our judgment we realize we have need to repent. Brother Allred reassured us all about the sacrifices Christ made for us. We are able to exchange our sins for righteousness through our Savior. What should students take awawy from Brother Allread's talk? There is a lot that Brother Allred talked about that I wont. But if there was something to take away it would be to raise our personal bar. The Lord is aware of where we are and he seeks to help us become perfected. But it takes time and work. If we are able to put forth this effort then we can truly become converted. And as Brother Allred put it we will become a fountain of revelation. So we should be careful what we watch, listen to, and how we act. Because there is no way to hide from God how we have used this life that has been given to us.

Meteor Shower

Don't forget about the Meteor Shower tonight!Meredith: Arts and entertainment is not just limited to the stage. Students are looking to the sky for a spectacular sight. There is a meteor shower that will be seen tonight. Joining us in the studio with more details is our current event specialist Jenny Farley.Jenny: That's right Meredith. Tonight meteor shower 'Leonids' will be viewable in our skies. The shower is due to peak today and the best time tonight will be just before dawn. It will last through tomorrow night. And you won't need a telescope to see this natural wonder. Luckily the moon will be just past new, so the lights will not affect our view. Meredith: Is there a difference between a shooting star and a meteor?Jenny: Not really. A shooting star is a common term for a singular meteor. A meteor shower is made of a bunch of comets and the debris that gets shed as it orbits the sun and melts the ice. That is actually what you see when you seee a shooting star is the trail of ice and dust that gets left behind a comet. Meredith: What is the best way to view this meteor shower?Jenny: Well Meredith, because we don't live in a large city the stars are actually very visible. However being close to the temple and near Idaho Falls makes it not as bright as it could be. If you go anywhere, make sure you drive north. According to Starsdate online magazine driving south will lead you to darker skies. If you can see the little dipper you know that the sky is dark enough to see the shower. It should be very interesting to watch. We haven't had a big meteor shower since this past summer. Written by Jenny Farley

City Council Elections

Elections for City COuncil are heating up. 13 candidates look forward to participation in City Council and possibly as Mayor of Rexburg.
By Jenny Farley
Sean Larson, the previous mayor of Rexburg, has retired and moved to Utah. Currently City Council President Chris Mann has taken over mayor duties but the position is open for applicants. 13 candidates are up for city council; 12 of those male and one of them female. It is the city council members that then will appoint the mayor. Each candidtate has unique experiences they feel will beneit the city of Rexburg.
Q: What are the candidates promising to citizens of Rexburg?
A: Most of them made comments about working efficiently on city council and building relationships with BYU-Idaho. Some were specific about how they would raise funds or take on certain projects. There is an excellent review of all of the candidates in this week's edition of the Scroll and of course more information can be had at City Hall.
Q: Are students able to participate in the vote?
A: Absolutely. As long as the students have lived in Rexburg for 30 or more days they are able to vote. The ballot is only open for today.
Make sure to get down to City Hall and cast your vote for city council members today. City Hall closes at 5pm.

International Students' Halloween Traditions

Halloween Traditions Differ for Students with International Backgrounds
By Jenny Farley
BYU-Idaho has many students from all over the world. As we know, Halloween is this weekend and our Jenny Farley asked some of these students what they do for this haunted holiday.
As October simply gets colder, students find themselves looking forward to the spooky holiday of Halloween. For some it may be the opportunity to dress up, eat sweets, or just throw a party with their friends. But what about those who aren't from the United States? I interviewed a few students who commented on their holiday cultural shock.
"Well, I'm from Korea and I've never really heard of Halloween until I came to this country." Said Chum Kin.
"I was skeptical, like why would people want to dress up scary?" Commented Benoni Sowah from Ghana.
"My parents are Mexicans and so growing up we didn't really celebrate Halloween. We just, we would stay home during Halloween." Stated Miriam Lopez. Benoni concluded by saying,
"On the other hand it's kinda fun, like, dressing up."
"It's more of a fun thing for kids." Argued Aaron Lopez. Chum let us in on what Korea's celebrations are like.
"They just have formal holidays. It's like Halloween for us is like fun holiday."
"I think I went trick-or-treating like twice... In my whole life." Admitted Miriam.
But their diverse backgrounds won't stop these students from participating in Halloween activities. Said Chum about her past Halloweens, "It gave me a lot of memories." Benoni confided,
"I have a family here. And so I will be giving out sweets."
"That's what they say back home, always check your candy." Warned Aaron. Chum was a little more positive saying,
"I didn't have to buy costume because I could just wear Korean traditional dress."
This is Jenny Farley wishing you all a fun, safe Halloween... iNews. Make sure to watch iNews to get the low down on the best Halloween activities on campus.

Swine flu hits nation and BYU–Idaho

Video produced by Jenny Farley/i-News
Story by Shannon Self/scroll staff
The Student Health Center is trying to accommodate students who wish to be seen by a doctor for their illnesses.
According to Marilyn Walker, a Student Health Center Registered Nurse, last week there were about 450 students in total that visited and were treated by the student health center. About 55 of those students had what the health center refers to as “influenza like illness”.
Walker also said not everyone who is sick is being seen. “Unfortunately we don’t have enough space in our schedule to accommodate everybody,” said Walker. “We’ve been trying to get information out so that students can do some home self care measures, and only have to come if they’re having something that seems more extreme.”
Sophomore Kat Rodriguez began having flu like symptoms on Saturday, October 16. After having a fever for about four days, she decided to call the student health center to schedule an appointment. She was told that their schedule was all full, and that she couldn’t be seen. Rodriguez proceeded to say that she really needed to be seen. The student health center then worked Rodriguez into the appointment schedule.
“It was such a waste of time. The doctor told me to keep doing what I’m doing and to stay in bed,” said Rodriguez. “The doctor didn’t even test me for anything.”
Junior Kim Foreman had a different experience. Foreman got sick the weekend of General Conference, October 4. She says her chest hurt, she was coughing, had a sore throat, headache, and was nauseous. On Monday, October 5, she made an appointment with the student health center, and was in the doctor’s office two to three hours later. After having her vitals taken and explaining her symptoms, the health center took a blood sample.
“They didn’t even mention the swine flu,” said Foreman. She said they told her that she had the flu. They never specified what variety of flu it was. Foreman was told to rest, and not leave her house. If she did leave her house, or was to be around others, she was to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Foreman was given medication; Robitussin with codeine. Robitussin is an over the counter drug, but codeine is not.
“There’s no really great treatment, it’s a virus,” said Walker. “Most everything that needs to be done can be done over the counter.”
Foreman says that she knows people who are getting the flu now, and are being given Theraflu from the health center.
“We are asking people to take care of yourself at home and to only come in if what you’re doing isn’t working and you’re getting worse,” said Walker.
Walker says the health center wants to inform students of when it’s necessary to seek medical attention, and when it’s not. Tips for the flu, among other information, can be found on the health center’s website: http://www.byui.edu/healthcenter/.

“We are asking people to take care of yourself at home and to only come in if what you’re doing isn’t working and you’re getting worse,” said Walker.

Tami's Salon

A new salon with a unique idea opened up in Rexburg.IT MAY SEEM LIKE THE LAST THING REXBURG NEEDS IS A NEW SALON; BUT THIS ONE MIGHT PROVE DIFFERENT. TAMI'S, NAMED AFTER THE SALON'S NEW OWNER, IS PLANNING TO MAKE IT MORE COMMUNITY-ORIENTED. THE STAFF OFFERS SERVICES TYPICAL TO MOST OTHER SALONS, SUCH AS HAIR CUTS AND TANNING. WHAT MAKES TAMI'S UNIQUE IS THAT CERTAIN COMMUNITY MEMBERS MAY RECEIVE FREE SERVICES ON WHAT THEY WILL CALL "THANK YOU" DAYS. THEY ARE ALSO PLANNING ON PRODUCING TV SEGMENTS HIGHLIGHTING HELPFUL TIPS ON 'HOW TO CUT BANGS' AND 'HOW TO CHOOSE A PROM DRESS'. OTHER TV SEGMENTS COULD FEATURE A COMPLIMENTARY MAKE-OVER COMPLETE WITH A NEW HAIR CUT, A NEW OUTFIT, AND TEETH WHITENING TO A LUCKY COMMUNITY MEMBER. LOCATED NEXT TO THE TACO TIME, TAMI'S IS NOW OPEN, OR CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE AT REVAMPT.COM. That's R-E-V-A-M-P-T.COM

The specific instructions for this assignment seemed unclear, so i hope a personal blog will suffice. I was able to attend a class during Forum. Brother Armhad Corbitt (spelling?) was the speaker. He talked about how communications relate to the gospel. He gave great insights like seeing hope in all situations (opposition in all things). He quoted scriptures and the other Comm Day speakers.

Dallin H. Oaks - Religious Freedom - Devotional

Elder Dallin H. Oaks spoke to students about how political turmoil affects their religious freedom.
[Anchor:Randy]
[INSERT VIDEO VO
NAME: Split Screen]
(RANDY cam 2)
OUR CURRENT EVENT SPECIALIST JENNY FARLEY IS BACK WITH US AND HAS THE LATEST UPDATES ON DEVOTIONAL. JENNY WHAT WAS IT LIKE IN THERE TODAY?
(Jenny)
WELL EVERYONE WAS VERY ANXIOUS TO HEAR FROM ELDER OAKS. THE HART BUILDING WAS COMPLETELY FULL. APPROPRIATELY SO, ELDER OAKS GAVE A VERY EXCELLENT TALK.
(Randy)
WHAT WAS HIS TOPIC?
(Jenny)
THE TOPIC WAS DIFFERENT THAN USUAL. HE TALKED ABOUT RELIGOIUS FREEDOM, HOW IT AFFECTS US, AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO PERPETUATE IT.
(Randy)
WHAT WERE SOME FO THE CONCERNS THAT ELDER OAKS HAD FOR THE STUDENTS REGARDING RELIGIOUS FREEDOM?
(Jenny)
ELDER OAKS PREDICTED THAT ANTI-RELIGIOUS AGRESSIONS WILL INCREASE IN THE YEARS TO COME. HE MENTIONED CONCERNS LIKE INTOLERANCE TOWARDS RELIGIOUS OPINIONS IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE, AND ALSO ADDRESSED "CIVIL RIGHTS" RELATING TO PROPOSITION 8.
(randy)
THOSE ARE DEFINITELY BIG ISSUES. WELL, DID HE OFFER ANY ADVICE?
(jenny)
HE DID, RANDY. HE MENTIONED 5 SPECIFIC POINTS OF COUNCIL ON HOW WE SHOULD CONDUCT OURSEVES. HE TOLD US TO INSIST ON OUR RELIGIOUS RIGHTS (INCLUDING THE RIGHT OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH), BE WISE ABOUT OUR POLITICS, AND ALWAYS SPEAK WITH LOVE.
(randy)
THANK YOU JENNY. OF COURSE, EVERY DEVOTIONAL IS AVAILABLE ONLINE. NEXT WEEK WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM JOHN AND SUSAN TANNER FROM BYU PROVO.

Feeling ill? Check out what the Student Health Center can do for you.[Anchor:Kyle]{Kyle CAM 1}MANY STUDENTS ARE TRYING TO STAY HEALTHY AS CLASSES SIMPLY GET HARDER. WE HAVE JENNY FARLEY TAKING A LOOK AT OUR SCHOOL'S FACILITIES IF YOU DO HAPPEN TO GET SICK. [TAKE PKGNAME: Student Health Center1DURATION:1:21]Many students and faculty members are taking early precautions to combat illness later in the semester. For others, it is already too late. I'm here at the Student Health Center to take a look at what goes on here. To find out more behind the scenes I asked an employee about the staff and facilities. [CG at 0:14:lower thirds\Charity Urso]"Okay we have 7 full-time providers and 3 of them are doctors, 2 full-time nurses, and then we have medical assistants and they are students. They'll bring back patients and get them ready with their vitals and everything for the doctor. Then we have the x-ray machine here, a full functioning lab, let's see, we have probably about nine receptionists up in the front and they are all students. We have a pharmacist named Sean and we also have students that work in the pharmacy that help with him getting ready for a prescription and getting students their prescriptions."I asked students what they thought of the Health Center.[CG at 0:50:lower thirds\Ben Farley]"The people at the front desk they gave me a temporary parking pass so it was very helpful."Other students were not as pleased. [CG at 0:56:lower thirds\Kelly Tibbitts] "I just had the flu not too long ago and I came in to make an appointment and they said they couldn't see me for another two days. So by the time I was actually able to come in for my appointment I was already recovered.""What we suggest is for you to visit our website and you can find it if you go to the BYU Idaho web page and go to the cite index and click on 'Health Center'. Then you can go to the Health Center website and it has some more tips.Reporting from the Student Health Center I'm Jenny Farley, iNews. [Anchor:Kyle]{--Kyle CAM 1}IT IS NEVER TOO EARLY TO START FIGHTING ILLNESS.
Devotional - Arms of the Savior

TODAY IN DEVOTIONAL WE WERE PLEASED TO HEAR FROM BRENT L. TOP, THE CHURCH HISTORY AND DOCTRINE CHAIR AT BYU PROVO. JENNY WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HIS MESSAGE?
{Jenny CAM 1}
LISTENERS TO DEVOTIONAL GOT A GREAT INSIGHT ABOUT THE ARMS OF THE SAVIOR. BROTHER TOP BEGAN BY TELLING US ABOUT HIS GRANDSON, GAVIN, WHO WAS BORN WITH A NUB FOR AN ARM. HE THEN RELATED THAT TO MORTALITY AND HOW THE NATURAL MAN IS OUR DISABILITY. WE NEED THE SAVING ARMS THE LORD TO SAVE US FROM OUR SELVES. HE DIVIDED IT INTO THREE PARTS: HIS ARMS OF POWER, HIS ARMS OF LOVE, AND HIS ARMS OF MERCY. CHRIST'S ARMS OF POWER PERFORM MIRACLES. IF WE WILL TRUST THEM WE WILL NEVER FALTER. CHRIST'S ARMS OF LOVE STRENGTHEN US IN TIMES OF TRIAL AND GIVE US COURAGE TO FACE OUR TRIBULATIONS. FINALLY, THE LORD'S ARMS OF MERCY ALLOW US TO BE CLEAN AND RETURN TO OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN'S PRESENCE. BROTHER TOP FINISHED BY EXTENDING US A CHALLENGE AND A PROMISE. HE ADVISED US TYO EXERCISE GREATER FAITH AND GO TO HIM TO BE CRADELED IN HIS ARMS. IF WE DO THIS, OUR ARMS WILL BE STRENGTHENED.
{Maredith CAM 2}
YOU GAVE A GOOD SUMMARY OF HIS TALK. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART?
(jenny cam 1)
I LIKED THE ILLUSION TO THE STORY IN MATTHEW OFJESUS TEACHING PETER TO WALK ON WATER.
(maredith cam 2)
WHAT ABOUT THAT STORY TOUCHED YOU?
(jenny cam 1)
BROTHER TOP BRIEFLY TOLD US ABOUT PETER AFTER FEARING THE WAVES AND BEGINNNG TO DROWN, CALLING OUT TO THE SAVIOR, "LORD, SAVE ME". IF PETER RELIED ON HIMSELF HE WOULD HAVE DROWNED. HE TOLD US THAT IF WE DON'T DEPEND ON THE SAVIOR WE WILL ALSO DROWN.

THANK YOU, JENNY. MAKE SURE TO ATTEND NEXT WEEK'S DEVOTIONAL GIVEN BY VICE PRESIDENT GARTH B. HALL TO LEARN MORE SPIRITUAL TRUTH.

TODAY IN DEVOTIONAL WE WERE PLEASED TO HEAR FROM BRENT L. TOP, THE CHURCH HISTORY AND DOCTRINE CHAIR AT BYU PROVO. JENNY WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT HIS MESSAGE?
{Jenny CAM 1}
{Maredith CAM 2}
