Overcoming Obstacles

Participants in Rexburg’s 2nd annual Cube Cyclocross encountered a variety of obstacles including mud, hills, sharp turns, barriers and an unexpected snowstorm on Saturday, Nov. 14. At some points of the race, participants had to get off their bikes and carry them. “I’m an avid cross racer. I like cross racing because it exploits athleticism. You have to power over the bike and good bike handling. What I like is that it’s so multifaceted. You are always mentally and physically busy,” said Bob Walker, a participant in the men’s advanced race. The race is held on three consecutive Saturdays. It started on Nov. 7 and will end on Nov. 21.Races included men’s and women’s advanced, men’s and women’s beginner and a cubez race (for 10 to 14 year olds); each race lasts 25 minutes. Participants could compete one day or all three Saturdays to complete the series.“For beginners getting on and off the bike to carry it over the barriers is the hardest part,” said Kate Summerill, a volunteer at the event. The event brought the community and BYU–I together.“It’s a good way to be involved in the community. There is a lot of opportunity for students to be involved in events and to serve,” said junior Lanae Ricks. The city of Rexburg is looking for volunteers to help with these kinds of events and hopes to get students involved in city events. “We are always looking for volunteers. I think this kind of a race appeals to students because it is about endurance and it’s weather related,” said Bob Yateman, Rexburg recreation director. Registration for the final cyclecross race to be Nov. 21 can take place any day before the race but ends an hour before races start. One-day registration costs $15 for adults and $5 for cubez racers. Series registration costs $35 for adults and $12 for cubez racers and is not refundable after registration has been processed.Participants who are completing the series will be awarded prizes on Nov. 21 after points from each race have been tallied. Points are awarded by the place that participants come in during each race. Prizes included medals for first, second, and third place and raffle prizes donated from local businesses for each participant.Madison Memorial Hospital, Sticks and Stones-Biking and Climbing, Kettle Embroidery and Screen Printing and The City of Rexburg sponsored the Cyclocross. All proceeds from races went to fund recreation programs and future events in Rexburg, according to www.rexburg.org. “It is all about fun. It gives them [students] something to look forward to,” said senior Kim Burly. For more information about Cyclocross and to see more pictures of the event, visit http://thecubecyclocross.blogspot.com or www.rexburg.org.

The fencing club meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. in the John W. Hart building.Fencing is offered each semester through the Exercise and Sports Science Department as a one-credit class. During this class, freshman Tyler Garrett discovered a love for the sport.“I took the class that teaches the basics. The best part is when you can just stab them [opponents] and they can’t block you at all,” Garrett said. The fencing club is made up of about 12 members and are offered free lessons. The members invite anyone who wants to learn to come to the stage in the gym at the Hart on Tuesday at 7 p.m. or Saturday at 11 a.m.“One time we had about 20 people show up. It was a blast,” said junior Annette Dehahn. Club meetings start with an hour of student-taught lessons and finish with either free fencing or a duel. Each duel begins with opponents saluting each other and ends with opponents shaking hands.“It teaches you respect, and it’s about honesty. We play dry fencing; we are not hooked up to wires. You have to say ‘yes’, I got touched,” Dehahn said. The club is set up for students to learn about fencing and to continue progressing in the sport.“It’s fun. You have fun working out this way. What’s better than using swords,” said sophomore Jonathan Kirkham. For more information about the fencing club email recsports@byui.edu.edu or register online at activities.byui.edu/sports/#. Kelsi Shipley Scroll

Jiujutsu means the gentle art. While working together, Mills and Brook discovered that they had a common love for self-defense and martial arts. Together they decided to teach the Brazilian jiujutsu class Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. in Hart 204. Jiujutsu was first developed in Japan for self-defense. Helio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian jiujutsu, wanted to adapt Japanese jiujutsu so that it could be performed on the ground, said Brook. “It really boosts your self confidence especially if you’re a girl and you get to throw the big guys,” said freshman Jessica Chantry. “Brazilian jiujutsu is less violent than regular Jiujutsu. It is about technique over strength,” said Mills. “Brazilian jiujutsu is a little man’s game,” Brook said. The Brazilian jiujutsu class has been running for the past four semesters. Students are invited to join the free class and learn a new skill. There is no need for any prior martial arts experience for students who show up for the class. It is a safe environment and does not allow full-contact fighting, according to the RecSports Web site. “Just join in,” Brooks said to a student who was watching the class. Jiujutsu can be fun, entertaining and provide a great work out. For more information about jiujutsu, email recsports@byui.edu or register online at activites.byui.edu/sports/#.
Junior Sam Waldron and freshman Kade Rucker participated in an event that they hadn’t planned on participating in Saturday.Saturday morning students gathered to participate in badminton and a pickle ball tournament in Hart 208. Waldron and Rucker were the only pickle ball team to come the tournament. “We love pickle ball,” said Waldron.Pickle ball is similar to badminton. However in pickle ball the net is lower, and participants use a wiffle ball and a wooden paddle instead of a birdie and a racket.Waldron and Rucker participated in the badminton tournament after it was obvious that no teams were going to show up for pickle ball. Including Waldron and Rucker, ten teams showed up to participate in the ten round tournament, each round lasting twelve minutes.“It’s pretty cool that everybody comes early on a Saturday morning to have fun,” said sophomore Tatiana Brenchley a volunteer helping at the tournament.Junior Russell Gordon was in charge of the student run tournament.“It’s a good leadership experience. It seemed like it would be the most fun and the easiest thing to run,” said Gordon. Junior Benji Skinner and Jason King won the tournament. As a grand prize they each received a T-shirt. Pickle ball champions Waldron and Rucker came in second in the badminton tournament.Any tournament on campus can be a great experience for students.

Smack, the crack from hitting the ball into center field echoes throughout the stadium. The batter throws the bat and sprints around the bases for a home run. The goal of softball is to hit the ball, run around three bases and back home to score. This is called a run. At the end of the game the team with the most runs wins.“I like the competitive [nature] of it,” said sophomore Micheal Corbridge.Softball and baseball are similar, but have substantial differences that set them apart. In softball pitchers throw under hand, while in baseball pitchers throw over hand or sideways. The pitcher pitches at a closer distance to home base, and the field is smaller. The ball used in a softball game is also about 3 inches larger than a baseball. Some every-day terms used in softball are bunt and grand slam. A bunt is when a batter taps the ball instead of hitting it, and a grand slam is when there are runners on each base and the batter hits a home run. This results in all the runners being able to run home and score. The RecSports softball program is coed, consisting of 10 players on each team. Each game is seven innings, or 50 minutes long.“We do play quick game format, meaning the batter starts with one ball and one strike,” according to http://activities.byui.edu/sports.For more information about RecSport softball, email RecSports at sportscompsec@byui.edu. Kelsi Shipleyscroll staff

Creativity strikes spirit week

“This year, the spirit rally is really laid back. It’s more about having fun,” said freshman Ruth Kindt, who helped at the event. On Thursday night, 14 teams signed up to participate in the 30-lap relay. “It is so fun. There’s nothing better than ward unification. This is one of my favorite things here,” said junior Kathryn Moore, a member of the 38th ward. The alumni association also came out to run. They wanted the students to know that they are out there. “I never did it while I was here. I guess this is my makeup. I’m excited,” said alumna Allison Coltes. Many students dressed up for the event. The 2nd ward was dressed, painted and sprayed green. The 82nd ward showed their spirit by dressing in bright orange. “We have lot of 82nd ward spirit,” said sophomore Ryan Stanley. The night started off with the lighting of the spirit torch. After the lighting, the cheerleaders and dance team performed.“The crowds get you pumped up. Without them, you’re not as pumped. It’s just good to be involved,” said Becca Berg, a freshman and a member of the dance team. Following the performance by the cheerleaders and the dance team, the relay began with each team’s first runner completing a 400-meter lap. However, after passing off the batons to their teammates, the running didn’t continue in the same fashion as relays in the past. This year jump roping, dancing couples, paddling, imitating Rocky Balboa and riding a wheelchair were all incorporated into the race. “The last stretch is the best part. You hear the crowd cheering. It’s a huge adrenaline rush,” said sophomore Natalie Reed. The 82nd ward won the race and will have their name and picture displayed on a plaque hung in the John W. Hart building for the rest of the year. Kelsi Shipleyscroll staff

Two hundred and seventy nine teams are involved in various RecSports activities this semester. The program has grown tremendously from when it was created, with football and soccer as the two leading sports, according to RecSports advisor Trent Tustian.
Many students get involved simply for the love of the game.
“I love intramural soccer. You get to meet great people in a more relaxed environment and at the same time get to play the best game ever,” said sophomore Ariel Russon.
One of the main reasons that students participate in RecSports is to be social and have fun. Students also play for fitness, the opportunity to compete and for leadership opportunities, according to Tustian.
“RecSport’s biggest goal is to get students involved,” said Trent Shippen, university sports coordinator.
RecSports is separated into two blocks, which consist of outdoor and indoor activities. When the second academic block starts on campus, another set of RecSports activities will also begin.
“We want students to be involved. Not in their apartments playing video games. We want to build Zion and disciple leaders,” Shippen said.
RecSports offers students a chance to be competitive, active and to have fun.
“Let Loose. It’s a great stress reliever,” Tustian said.
For more information about RecSports call 496-2115 or visit Hart 227.

Sports injuries: where to get help

About 2,846 students are participating in RecSports activities this semester, and like in any activity, participants could get injured.
“The RecSports Program will provide initial first response care, such as the provision of bandages, ice, or immobilization, to any participant injured during a RecSports contest,” according to the policies and procedures posted on the activities Web site.
The Web site also advised students to make sure that their medical insurance is sufficient for the activities that they are involved in.
“Students play at their own will, under their own coverage,” said Trent Tustian, the RecSports university activities advisor.
If injured while participating in RecSports, students can go to the Student Help Center on campus, Rexburg Community Care or Madison Memorial Hospital.
There is no discount for any student who is injured during a RecSports activity at Community Care or the emergency room at the hospital.
“All game managers are first response trained. They know CPR and basic first aid. If there is a problem, game managers should be able to take care of the injury on a first response basis, until further help can be attained,” Tustian said.
For students playing competitive sports there is a sports first aid room where athletes are taken care of for free. This is located in John W. Hart 161 and is open Monday through Friday 2 to 7 p.m.
“There are so many numbers of students participating. Competitive teams hold practices and are usually more dedicated,” said athletic trainer and advisor to the first aid room Jodi Howard.
Student employees from the first aid room are on the sidelines for all football games and hitting practices. For other competitive games they are always in the surrounding area.
“Workers receive hands on experience and perform a wonderful service to their peers,” Howard said.
According to Trent Shippen, university sports coordinator, one of their goals is for students to be safe.
The department of activities is concerned with the safety of all RecSports and competitive sports participants. Participating in a RecSports activity or a competitive sport does not automatically mean that a student will be injured. There are risks in any activity.
To contact the Student Health Center call (208) 496-1300.

Senior Mike Walton who is studying business management said, “It’s events like this that make me feel good about myself as a person.”
Freshman Robert Barlow also showed up to play. He had never played hockey before Saturday, but enjoyed it. He said that the hardest part for him was puck control.
This game was an introduction to the rest of the hockey season. Throughout the month of October students will be able to participate in clinics and tournaments. The winner of the last tournament will receive a T-shirt, and bragging rights for the rest of their stay at BYU–Idaho.
The first clinic will be held on October 10. Students will have the opportunity to play, have fun, and receive pointers. It will be followed by a skills clinic on October 14.
“These clinics will help students learn the basics of skating, passing, shooting, puck control, as well as the general philosophy of the game” said Chris Pew, RecSports marketing coordinator.
A round robin tournament will take place October 17 at the ice rink. During this tournament, teams will have the opportunity to play each other at least once. This will also determine what rank they will be and when they will play during the final tournament on October 24.
Roller hockey is a fast paced and exciting sport. Mike Alton a senior studying earth science education said,“I grew up playing. I like it a lot better than other sports. It is fast paced and you get to hit people."
Austin Wood, the Fall Rec roller hockey Coordinator said, “Just as many organizations on campus provide opportunities to get involved, roller hockey gives students a chance to participate in an organized, uplifting program.”
According to Wood, BYU–Idaho has bought about 200 pairs of roller blades for students to use. He said, “If we can get enough players signed up for roller hockey, why don’t we use them all!”
Whether it is a freshman who has never played before, or a senior who has played for years roller hockey can be for everyone. For more information about roller hockey please email recsportsevents@byui.edu.

Swerve left. Swerve right. Time is running out. It’s now or never. Barely missed the opponent. Kick the ball, GOAL! Whether it is soccer, football, baseball, or frisbee, the adrenaline rush of playing sports can be overpowering. BYU-Idaho gives all students the opportunity to participate in athletics.
