Futsal: to be or not to be added to RecSports

Twenty-eight teams of five to seven players competed in a Futsal tournament on Nov. 7, 13 and 14. “We had all sorts of players, including a team of married students who showed up with kids in tow,” said AJ Creek, futsal event coordinator.Team Ice won the tournament. Ice was made up of BYU–Idaho students Joe Januzzi, Sam Tsukamoto, Jeff Hawley, Zach Rasmussen, Tyson Thomas and Jacquelin Cox.Futsal used to be a part of the RecSports program but had to be removed due to bad sportsmanship. Creek tried to petition, but due to the time frame in the semester, it was too late to be considered for the Fall 2009 schedule. Instead, to see how many would come out and play, Creek put on a futsal tournament. “It came off without a hitch. Notwithstanding the lack of space, budget, time and referees — we didn’t want paid refs anyways — it couldn’t have gone any better,” Creek said. Approximately 160 students competed in the tournament. Creek says the turnout was “three to four times bigger than he thought.”Futsal is similar to soccer, but there are some major differences. For instance, the size of the field and teams are much smaller. Futsal is played in an area the size of a basketball court with teams made up of five players. Futsal games usually only last for 20 to 30 minutes. “It’s much easier for your ‘average joe’ to play because endurance isn’t a key element — just good teamwork,” Creek said.Futsal is currently being considered for the Winter 2010 RecSports schedule. Creek hopes that the new card system will help to control futsal so the sport may return to BYU–I. “Right now, our only time available is during open play Monday nights and it’s pretty hard to give everyone who shows up a chance to play,” Creek said.So what do you think?
Ultimate frisbee, the ultimate sport

Ultimate teams made up of seven players gather at their respective end of the field in anticipation to start the game. Defense starts the point by throwing the Frisbee (or disc) to the offense. “The main reason I play [ultimate] is because it is good cardio. It’s also just a lot of fun,” said ultimate player Devin Smith. The disc can be thrown in any direction, but players cannot run while holding the disc. However, players can pivot in any direction and have ten seconds to throw the disc. A team is able to score by passing the disc to a teammate in the opposing team’s end zone. When the offense doesn’t complete a pass by either throwing it out of bounds, dropping it, throwing an interception, the opposing team blocking it, etc., the defense takes possession. Ultimate is a “no contact sport.” This means players cannot come into physical contact with another player. If a player does, a foul is called. However, ultimate is typically played as a self-refereeing sport. Fouls have to be called and resolved by the players. Columbia High School students, more specifically David Leiwant, started ultimate Frisbee in 1968 according to www.ultimatehandbook.com.“That year, staff members of the school’s newspaper, The Colombian, and student council members developed an entirely new sport as a gag and an activity for their high school nights. Led by Joel Silver — the willful, if somewhat arrogant, member of the Council and the newspaper — the students adapted the rules of Frisbee football and ultimately invented the fast-moving team sport we know today. The sport of ultimate,” according to www.ultimatehandbook.com. Katie Petersen

WOMEN'S:BYU-Idaho’s women’s competitive soccer program ended on Nov. 7 with Vikings winning the championship game in a 4 to 5 shoot out. Originally, the program had seven teams, but due to a lack of players on one team, two teams–Lady Titans and Spartans–combined. “It’s been interesting since we started with only seven girls and had to combine with the Spartans this last week. We’ve gotten better with teamwork and communicating though,” said Titans’ left defense player Valerie Wilke. The six teams are made up of approximately 14 players each: Lady Vikings (3-2), Lady Hawks (4-2), Lady Titans (0-5), Lady Bruins (4-1), Lady Hurricanes (1-4) and Lady Knights (5-0). “We abide by FIFA rules, but with some modifications. Unlike FIFA, we are allowed to sub players in and out as many times as we would like. We also have a strict no slide tackling rule to prevent injuries.” “We have also adopted the sportsmanship point rule that is in other sports. Players who receive three points are disqualified. If teams receive seven points they are eliminated. The points roll over from other sports, including RecSports.
BYU–Idaho’s fall competitive golf program has 24 golfers this season, creating five teams of four to five people. This program abides by USGA rules and is coed. Each match is held at Teton Lakes Golf Course. October 23 and 24 the teams competed in a tournament. The team placings are as follows: Titans came in first with Hawks and Bruins tieing for second, Spartans in third and the Knights coming in fourth place. Team scores are figured by taking the total average of each player’s score. “I think everyone in the league is evenly matched. I tried to make it more fluid and as even as possible by not putting all of the best guys on just one team, but spreading them out,” said competitive golf coordinator Cameron Thatcher. October 23 and 24 will be the program’s final tournament. Unlike past tournaments, this will be for individual and team competition. The 18-hole tourney will tee off Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. “We have a good group of guys and if we can keep our cool and heads, we can do really well [in the tournament],” said Spartans coach Andy Walker. In order to get a team’s score for the match, a team’s two best scores and the worst score are averaged. “I’m pretty sure each team is within two or three strokes of each other, but we do it on a point system. So the team that wins gets one point and the team that loses doesn’t receive a point,” Thatcher said. The season will end this Saturday, Oct 24 at the conclusion of the tournament.Katie Petersen

First down. BYU–Idaho’s competitive football program took off last Saturday with four games: 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm consecutively. “We are really excited about the season this year. We have record participation both in number of players and coaches. One of the big factors in this is the move we made this summer from 9-man football to 11-man. We hope this will also get fans excited and bring people from the University and the community out on Saturdays. When we had a single intercollegiate team, it was a unifying element between the college and the community and we hope to bring that back. We also did a blind draft for the first time this year, and we think it will bring a lot of balance and increased competition to the league,” said Competitive Football Sports Coordinator Eric Erickson. The Bruins faced the Spartans as the very first game of the season winning 19-7. After the Vikings took on the Hawks losing 0-13.“The Hawks are a great bunch of young men who know how to play football, they are also establishing great team unity and are coming together quite well for only having to play with each other for a couple of weeks I am excited for our first game and feel that we will be successful,” said Hawks Coach Joe Belnap. Then the Wolverines played the Hurricanes beating them 7-6 with the Wildcats beating the Titans 22-6 for the final game for the day.“The Titans have really come together as a team very quickly. We’ve only been together for two weeks and already I, as a coach, can see the guys establishing those bonds. I think the whole league will be quite competitive, as we have scrimmaged other teams everyone looks to have different strengths and weakness which should make for exciting games come Saturdays,” said Titans Coach Tyler Shotwell.Every Saturday through October and most of November will be at the same time as previously stated. The championship game will be on Thursday, November 19. Each team consists of 19-22 players meaning many of the players play both offense and defense. The games consist of ten-minute quarters with a halftime.“We follow High School rules, with some variations, like no kick-offs and removing players from the game for Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties,” Erickson said. Many of the players chose to play in competitive program over RecSports.“It [competitive football] requires more dedication. I can focus, play hard and meet some great guys,” said Bruins’ freshman wide receiver Chris Hansen.By playing in the competitive sports program, the players are able to play more along the lines of traditional football rather than flag-football.“I wanted to have fun. It’s the only chance to tackle,” said Spartans’ sophomore wide receiver and cornerback Dawson Chapman. All coaches are fellow students at BYU–I.“It’s [coaching] what I’ve wanted to do for the rest of my life. The best part is working with the team,” said Spartans head coach Christopher Windham. The first five weeks consist of regular season games. “The 6th Saturday, we will begin our playoffs, seeding the teams according to record,” Erickson said. All teams will play again this Saturday starting at 10:00 am at the Stadium Field.Katie Petersen

Wallyball: a smashing hit with active students

Several students have recently learned how to play wallyball through the exercise and sport science department’s new free clinics.
“It gives students an opportunity to relax from their classes and homework and just learn how to play [wallyball]. Students can bring all of their friends because it’s not a required class. All of the students that participate just have the free time during this block of time,” said student coach Ethan Felix.
Felix and his wife, Ashley, have been coaching the wallyball clinics as student directors. However, after the first week, Ashley had to stop coaching because she had a baby. “It’s been great; all of the students learned really quick. The first week and a half we spent going through the rules. After that, we just go and play. We’ve had about seven to ten participants on average each time,” Ethan said. Wallyball is similar to volleyball; however, it is played on a racquetball court with a net hooked from wall to wall down the middle of the court. The ball, although it looks similar and is near the same size, is made up of latex materials like a racquetball. Many of the rules are parallel to volleyball, but the ball can be played off a wall as long as it doesn’t hit two walls before hitting the opposing team’s side. “It’s a great way to meet new people. This is my last semester here and I’m really going to miss playing this,” said senior Oscar Rubio.

A select group of BYU–Idaho male soccer players travel across Utah, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming to compete against other university teams. Faculty member Peter Stilling coaches the team. The traveling soccer team, Dragons, had to go through vigorous try-outs in order to participate. These try-outs consisted of a two-mile run, 200 meter dash and 40 meter-sprint in addition to testing each individual’s soccer skills. The Dragons have already faced Weber State and Idaho State with scores of 1-1 and 5-1 consecutively. They will also take on Central Wyoming, Western Wyoming Community College, Utah State, Boise State, Salt Lake Community College, Northwest Nazarene, BYU–Idaho’s All-Stars and the Dragon Alumni. Their season lasts through late October.“A large group of students on campus could have played sports on a university level, but chose to come here. It’s really neat to be able to get some of these collegiate students together and compete against other universities,” said junior Brady Ririe.Ririe plays for the Dragons as center midfield and forward. He has played soccer since elementary school on many different teams including travel teams. Since this is his first time to be at BYU–I in the fall, this is the first time he’s been able to be on the team. However, he has participated in soccer intramural sports during other semesters.Katie Petersen

BYU–Idaho golfers competed Friday in a Golf Scramble held at Municipal Golf Course. The event was done in “Best ball format,” which means the player on the team that ended up with the best score would count for the entire team. Tim Hetzler, Johnathan Sarlo, Rob Hainer and Thomas Park, team “Addicted,” were able to dominate and win the scramble. Each team consisted of four golfers. “The wind was tough, but the competition was tougher,” said sophomore Dustin Blunck. Despite the challenges from the weather and other competetors, the event was deemed a success. “The golf scramble went great! We had 42 participants in all and there was a great atmosphere all around,” said Event coordinator Marli Manning. Prizes were given for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. “I’m greatly disappointed because I didn’t get a hole in one,” said sophomore Dallin Burgener. Burgener and Blunck were both members of the team “Da Local Boyzz” which also included sophomores Klint Anderson and Michael Burger. “It was a huge upset that we didn’t win,” Burgener said. Katie Petersen

Run that ye may obtain

Fifty-one teams raced on Saturday from Idaho Falls to Rexburg in the Temple-to-Temple Relay. BYU-Idaho students, employees and their families participated.
Fabulous Flying Family Fomenters, a team made up of faculty from the Department of Home and Family and two employees’ sons, was the first team to complete the race. Tyler Anderson, faculty member Owen Anderson’s 16-year-old son, ran the last leg for the team.
“I haven’t really ran since the Teton Dam Marathon, but I still did okay. The last leg was definitely more uphill than I thought it was going to be,” Anderson said.
The actual starting point was at the church building directly south of the Idaho Falls Temple with the finish line at the church west of the Rexburg Temple. A total of 384 runners participated. The expedition was 32.7 miles.
“I think this event was good for encouraging fitness. No one had to run a whole marathon, but were still able to feel like they had accomplished something. And they did. You don’t have to run a marathon to be in shape,” said senior Ashley Young, first aid trainer.
Each team consisted of two, four or eight members. Many participants created names for their teams such as: “Sole Sisters,” “The Stinky Sock Gang,” “Fast Forward” or “We’ve Got Sole.”
“Our team was too into a picture so we started five minutes later than planned; but I still made the exact time I was expecting,” said senior Rebecca Hill. “It was amazing. Being able to see such beautiful areas of Idaho Falls that you don’t usually get to see was really awesome. The whole event was well done and put together.”
Although the event officially began at 8 a.m., the teams started on a staggered schedule. The latest a team took off was 9:15 a.m.
Prior to the race, each team had to figure out the estimated time it would take for them to complete the race by using a pace calculator; this is what determined the beginning time for each team.
“I ran the third leg, but the first two leaders got a good head start for our team so I was able to maintain it. Our team did very well. If they decide to do this event again next year, we’re probably going to challenge students in our department to run and try to beat us,” said Tom Rane, a member of the Family and Home department and of the Fabulous Flying Family Fomenters.
The course was made up of eight exchange points. Every individual ran at least one leg; some ran multiple legs depending on the size of their team. Legs varied from 2.6 to 5.2 miles with the average leg being 4.1 miles.
A lot of work went into planning this event. Doug Stutz, Head of Activities, has been planning this for a year.
“I think this is a great activity to get involved in running. Hopefully people that have never even been big into running will be running. The idea is to get people into a pattern of healthy lifestyles,” Stutz said.
