The Climbing offers a new "Perspective"

“I'm a gypsy with a song, and I'll sing my heart out” – “Far From Loneliness”

Local pop-rock duo: The Climbing released their debut album “Perspective” for pre-sale February 4. Sophomore Steven Biringer and Junior Jason Call, both sophomores studying business management, talked to The Scroll about their reasons for starting their musical careers here in Idaho and the story behind their new album.

The two are fairly new, musically speaking, to BYU-I. Both have been touring and playing music all over the country for years with various bands, and have already developed fan bases in Seattle and Pittsburgh, their home towns. “It'd be easy to be big anywhere else. In Seattle or Pittsburgh, we would instantly have more recognition,” said Biringer, lead vocalist and guitarist.

However, they felt it important to start The Climbing in Rexburg. “We chose Rexburg because we believe in the kids here. Without sounding egotistical, we know the product [Perspective] is good. We feel like the people should give it a chance,” said bassist Jason Call. With themes of love, friendship, subtle gospel undertones and even a song entitled “Rexburg”, the songs on “Perspective” are tailor-made for music fans at BYU-I.

According to Call and Biringer, the album reflects growth and lessons learned. After their missions, the two had a lot of time to think about their music and themselves and where they'd like to take both. “I would travel on a lot of flights for my job at the time. I would spend a lot of time looking down at the earth thinking about where I wanted to go with my life. This album is about a new perspective we have on life. The songs all represent our new viewpoints on those things,” said Call.

Both Call and Biringer believe in their musi, the messages they convey, and the stories they tell. “Life is all about your perspective...As we grow, our perspective widens. That's what we wanted to show with this album,” said Biringer.

The Climbing will perform at The Box Club on March 5 with drummer Jack Parker. “Perspective” is now available for $10. In addition to the album, the purchase includes a band button, sticker, and free entrance to the release show on March 5.
