Stand for Tenants' Rights

On March 10th, 2010 at 2:30pm there will be a peaceful protest and petition signing event at the Madison County Courthouse on Main St in Renxburg, Idaho.

This event has been inspired by victims of the lack of protection for tenants rights in Idaho. Idaho is generally well known in it's court system to favor landlords, but that is not the only concern.

Unlike other states all around the U.S. Idaho's Landlord and Tenant Guidelines do not offer a specific protection for tenants rights, it does not require proper specific maintenance duties from the landlord for the property except for general health and safety, it has little or no penalties for tenant abuse, and does not cover much for policies for the new and controlling management companies.

From living in un-acceptably maintained properties to having deposits stolen and illegal fines and practices the impoverished young families with children and BYU-Idaho students are at the top of the list of victims.

Many students get hit because of semester conflicts with local appartments and the illegal confescation of deposits funds. They are attacked because they have no power to defend themselves except to send in a complaint form to the Idaho Attorney Generals Office, which most do not even know about.

Often graduating students must leave behind hundreds of dollars in deposit funds because the landlords simply keep them against both federal and state laws and guidelines. With no time for small claims and an interest to move on with their lives this has become an gold mine of filthy lucre to local management companies some of which whose average rating online are less than 1 star out of 5.

A local BYU-Idaho Alumni has had enough. It is important to get involved in the world around you. Rosalee Nelsen has been familier with Rexburg Idaho since the year 2000, leaving for a brief time and then returning. A resident here for a total of 7+ years. Things like this damage the communities reputation all over the world where ever students come from.  This is a good community and most of the people in it do not approve of what is going on with these companies. Often companies have owners outside of the state with a few exceptions.

All of the local news stations and papers have been notified of the event in hopes to give it some spotlight in the public eye.

The petition will cover the differences between Idaho and other states  who focus on protecting tenants rights to hope to achieve some reform in the Idaho Laws. If there are any other questions contact nelsenrosalee10@yahoo.com for details or to RSVP for the event.
