Mid-Morning’s Mackles, a guerilla poetry reading group, held a meeting Jan. 27 in a local laundry facility.
The group was started by three BYU-Idaho students: Garrett Sherwood, a junior studying political science; Ryan Hayes, a senior studying geology; and Mike Hodges, a junior studying history.
Sherwood said that Mid-Morning’s Mackles could be interpreted to mean “brilliance” or “error.” Sherwood chooses to interpret it as “brilliance through error.”
“We’ve been wanting something like this for a long time. I’ve always loved poetry and on this campus there’s no real opportunity for people who like poetry to express that,” Sherwood said.
Mid-Morning’s Mackles allows students to read original poetry as well as anything students find interesting.
The group meets weekly on different days, at different times and at different places to accomodate for different schedules.
The group first met in the Eliza R. Snow Building. For the second meeting, they met in a local laundry facility.
“It’s a no-pressure situation. It’s not a performance or audition. There’s a lot of people who don’t have an outlet for this kind of entertainment,” Sherwood said.
To join Mid-Morning’s Mackles, students can join the Facebook page or e-mail Sherwood at gmale19@gmail.com.
“Something I’ve been impressed by is people who didn’t read original writings the first week wrote something of their own for the second week,” Sherwood said. “We’re letting people have more comfort expressing something they wouldn’t otherwise. That’s the power of a group like this.”
