Participants in Rexburg’s 2nd annual Cube Cyclocross encountered a variety of obstacles including mud, hills, sharp turns, barriers and an unexpected snowstorm on Saturday, Nov. 14. At some points of the race, participants had to get off their bikes and carry them.
“I’m an avid cross racer. I like cross racing because it exploits athleticism. You have to power over the bike and good bike handling. What I like is that it’s so multifaceted. You are always mentally and physically busy,” said Bob Walker,
a participant in the men’s advanced race.
The race is held on three consecutive Saturdays. It started on Nov. 7 and will end on Nov. 21.
Races included men’s and women’s advanced, men’s and women’s beginner and a cubez race (for 10 to 14 year olds); each race lasts 25 minutes. Participants could compete one day or all three Saturdays to complete the series.
“For beginners getting on and off the bike to carry it over the barriers is the hardest part,” said Kate
Summerill, a volunteer at the event.
The event brought the community and BYU–I together.
“It’s a good way to be involved in the community. There is a lot of opportunity for students to be
involved in events and to serve,” said junior Lanae Ricks.
The city of Rexburg is looking for volunteers to help with these kinds of events and hopes to get students involved in city events.
“We are always looking for
volunteers. I think this kind of a race appeals to students because it is about endurance and it’s weather related,” said Bob Yateman, Rexburg
recreation director.
Registration for the final cyclecross race to be Nov. 21 can take place any day before the race but ends an hour before races start.
One-day registration costs $15 for adults and $5 for cubez racers. Series registration costs $35 for adults and $12 for cubez racers and is not refundable after registration has been processed.
Participants who are completing the series will be awarded prizes on Nov. 21 after points from each race have been tallied.
Points are awarded by the place that participants come in during each race. Prizes included medals for first, second, and third place and raffle prizes donated from local businesses for each participant.
Madison Memorial Hospital, Sticks and Stones-Biking and Climbing, Kettle Embroidery and Screen Printing and The City of Rexburg sponsored the Cyclocross.
All proceeds from races went to fund recreation programs and future events in Rexburg, according to www.rexburg.org.
“It is all about fun. It gives them [students] something to look forward to,” said senior Kim Burly.
