REXBURG, Idaho—The Benson Building fire alarms were sounded Wednesday night due to a microwave fire that a student caused while making dinner.
Many students were unsure of what exactly happened.
“I was just in the Taylor and I heard fire alarms so I came out to see what was going on. I saw fire trucks an ambulance came and lots of people were crowded around the Benson” said student Jessica Richardson
Steven Palmer and architecture and construction management major said, “We were in Science Class and the fire alarm went off we all came out for awhile and then because someone said that a dinner on the second floor started the fire. “
Some students weren’t too disappointed to be out of class though, “I was watching the Olympics on my computer in class and the fire alarm went off then we walked outside and have been standing here ever since” said Justin Jensen
Student Jake Powell thought it was interesting how his class responded to the alarms. “The fire alarm went off and it was weird and the teacher let it ring a few times and then said OK we better go.”
The Rexburg Fire Department arrived on the scene as well as EMS and police to assist in the situation. Fire Fighters discovered that indeed a microwave had caused the smoke that triggered the alarm.
After about 20 minutes of standing outside the building was cleared and students were able to return safely to class
