What? A parking permit for the street! What is happening to the sweet Rexburg I love? When my husband, children, and I moved away last summer only to return this April to a totally changed town, and not all good changes either! Because housing is so hard to find at a reasonable price and still be close to campus, we moved to an apartment complex on Pioneer Rd. It is on the outskirts of town and far from campus. I walked to class for 4 days, each time it took me 45 minutes. So in order not to have to pay for a parking ticket I have to walk for 90 minutes per day. Then today I drove to class only to find that they actually had signs for how to park our cars. I feel like this whole situation is discriminatory on the students who don't live close to school! I always parked on the street and made sure to arrive early enough to find a spot. Now they want us to pay and not only that, PARK a certain way? I'm really questioning the motives behind this! Can't anyone stand up and take back some of our freedoms? I know its not extreme, but I don't like my freedoms being taken away from me bit by bit. Does anyone else feel this is unfair?

backing into the spot is actually much safer. I'd post diagrams, but that takes too much of my time. Let it suffice to say that pulling out of a space as oppsoed to backing out is much safer for drivers. I don't know if you've taken a look around the campus and student housing, but the capability of a student properly parking leaves MUCH to be desired, which at first makes me question why they'd do this. However, it is MUCH safer, and it's more practical.
You speak as if it's a personal violation, but what about the local residents on college ave who never have places for their own guests to park, or have to call the tow truck because students have the audacity to park in front of driveways?
Yes, it sucks that the parking is usually taken by lazy students who live a block from campus. It's been proposed to the SRC before that expecting mothers and those who live far off should get first dibs on campus permits two or three days before they go on sale to everyone else. Doesn't work that way though.
I don't know why you take such a long walk. There are places to park near porter, and near the Ricks. It's a ten minute walk to the snow from porter. I know, I've lived there. The ricks lot always has free spaces. Why you chose to park there, I have no idea. I hope you understand why I'd refuse to sympathise, since you never used other options.
35 bucks is nothing, and 5 bucks is a steal...if those are still the prices. My friend monica had to cough up a few hundred if she wanted to get similar parking at UTX. If it were my choice, I'd charge 25 bucks for a B sticker, PLUS deny them to dorm-ites and freshmen, unless the fish lived more than two blocks away.
I support your "neighbor". It's a convenience lost, not a freedom. Do try to not get confused between the two, my friend.
JRV, 2 years ago | FlagI understand your frustration. I live on Pioneer Road too. However, I think you are confusing the word freedom with convenience.
You are free to park on the street, there is just an extra step. No one is saying you can't park there.
There is "b" parking which is easy enough to get a decent spot if you get there early like you said you do.
Do you have neighbors with whom you could carpool?
There are a number of in-town shuttle services that can pick you up and take you where you'd like to go.
Also, I think if you took a moment to think, you can figure out why they want everyone to back-in parking. Rules like that only get instituted when there have been problems in the past.
So, rest assured, your freedom is fully intact. Yeah, it is inconvenient, but there are ways around it.
Respectfully,
Your Neighbor.
