For Comm day, the only part I was able to attend was the question and answer session with Ahdmad Corbitt. I really enjoyed listening to him. One thing he said that I loved was an analogy he gave about contention. A girl asked him how to avoid contention when someone attacks you or your religious beliefs (in her question I think she mentioned prop 8). He said a really good way to avoid contention is to diffuse the situation by deconstructing the misunderstanding that disagreeing is the same thing as hating.
He said something to the effect of, "For example, I think it's chilly outside. Steve over there thinks it's warm outside. I'm from Florida, and to me it is cold. Steve is from Alaska and to him, it feels nice out. We disagree. That means we hate each other."
I thought that was such a simple way to say it, but it really makes sense. It makes it seem ridiculous that anyone can say, for example, that I hate homosexuals because I disagree with their beliefs. His analogy is something I think I will always remember in the future.
