Well here we are at the Welding lab where students diligently work on their baja racer preparing for a competition which is very important for them and the school. Let’s cover the story and see what they’ve got for us.

Students work diligently here in the Automotive department to finish their creation called the Baja Racer.  This 10 horsepower dune buggy was created one year ago and revisions are being made to make the best car possible for the competition in May. Every Saturday these students devote about 4 hours of their time to build, come up with new ideas and put their heads together to move the project along.

“ The hardest part I guess is…is finalizing your ideas because we’ve all got different ideas on how we want to make something work then we put it together, and then we refine those ideas by bouncing ideas off of one another to come to a final solution for the problem and…so that’s I guess not necessarily the most difficult but the most time consuming.” Said David, BYU-Idaho student.

From doing simple repairs like ratchet work to intense repairs like welding, hard work is put into this car to make it best suited for the competition.  Business is also included.

“My favorite part of the project has to be driving the car. Obviously it’s fun to build something then to just mash on it and drive over things and wreck it. I think the worst part of it is probably all of the business side of it, having to do cost analysis reports and business reports for it, so that’s probably the worst part of it.” Said Nathan Wilcoxson, Automotive Engineers President.

Now we wish the best of luck in the competition to these students.
